We're on a mission to make Australian women's history accessible, entertaining, and engaging through walking tours, social media and one-off events.

She Shapes History started with a simple question – "Where are the women in the history of Australia?"

Bushrangers, convicts, diggers, blokes and battlers are often seen as the main characters of Australian history. In the story of our nation, women have frequently been cast as minor characters. Countless stories have been lost, left unrecorded, undervalued, and untold. As a society, it's so easy to forget that women were behind many of the moments that shaped Australia.

We believe that by recovering the remarkable stories of the women who shaped history, we can challenge our perception of women today. Closing the respect gap in Australian politics and culture today requires that we recognise and re-imagine what Australian women, particularly First Nations women, queer women, women of colour and women with disabilities, have achieved in the past.

While there are many ways to learn more about our history, there is nothing quite like a walking tour. Walking tours offer a unique opportunity to share history in an inclusive, accessible and non-judgmental context.

We use walking tours to highlight the diverse and often forgotten women behind the moments that shaped Australia. We want all Australians, no matter their race, gender or sexuality, to be able to see themselves in Canberra's landscape, in Australian history, and the story of our nation.

So, where are the women in the story of Australia? Well, as you'll discover on our tours, everywhere.

Host presented reasonably well considering it was her first tour. The tour was enjoyable and informative.

Women in Espionage Walking Tour: Secrets in the Capital review by Rebecca Hamon - Canberra

Host's response

A lot of Canberra history is 'big', public moments in big, public places. This tour dealt with events at a much more intimate, human scale and events that were often (but not always) hidden from public view. The lack of such big backdrops requires a skilled storyteller, and with Zev we had that and much more. They brought a passion and connection to the subject. Not everyone can breathe life into a window, a park, a tennis court or the site of a building long gone. Zev was able to do just this. While this is a must do for anyone interested in queer history, it is just as fascinating for people who want to know about the parts of history that are less well known but every bit as interesting.

Fantastic experience! Zev clearly has a deep passion for the subject and is eager to share it with guests. The tour was packed with fascinating insights into local lore and community culture. I highly recommend this tour for all LGBTQIA+ individuals visiting or living in Canberra, as well as anyone outside the community who wishes to learn more about an often overlooked aspect of Australian history.

My friend and I took this tour with Alison. From start to finish, our experience with She Shapes History exceeded our expectations. Our guide, Alison, was outstanding. She is a wonderful, knowledgeable storyteller. Her passion for history made everything come alive, and the information she shared was compelling—stories that NEED to be heard. Each stop she chose was significant, and the time on the tour flew by. Alison answered our questions, ensured we were comfortable, and even recommended lunch spots for after the tour. I would recommend this tour to anyone interested in history, those passionate about social justice, anyone curious about Canberra, and those seeking an urban adventure. I feel fortunate to now know the history that many books and guides omit. Alison mentioned that She Shapes History offers two other tours. We plan to take both!

Sam was a wonderful guide with great historical insight and knowledge. I enjoyed the tour more than I expected and learned a lot. I also made some new friends along the way. I will be going on more tours with She Shapes History in the near future. Highly recommend.

A real highlight from my trip to Canberra. Zev was an incredible guide and really brought the tour to life -- it was a nice group and I had some great exchanges with the others as we explored the area. I felt like I made a couple of new friends from this experience, whilst I had an informative journey through our incredible queer history. Definitely worth your time!

Absolutely loved this tour! Exactly what I was looking for in a walking tour, great stories and gave lots of history. Sita was our tour guide and you could tell she really knew her stuff! Very energetic, funny and lively. Would definitely take another tour with She Shapes History if i’m ever back in Canberra.

Sita was an amazing tour guide! Knowledgeable, fun, and tried to get everyone involved so that we all enjoyed the tour! I loved hearing her stories and wanted it to last longer. The postcard at the end was a lovely touch. I was a bit nervous about doing the tour solo, but Sita made me feel like a long lost friend! I'm looking at booking their Badass Women of Canberra tour next!

Host's response

Thank you, Jess! We're thrilled to hear that Sita made your tour experience so enjoyable. It's always our goal to make our guests feel comfortable and at home, so we're glad that Sita was able to achieve that! We're also happy to hear that you loved hearing her stories and wanted the tour to last longer :-)

We promise that you'll have an equally amazing time on our Badass Women of Canberra tour. It's filled with inspiring stories of women who have made a significant impact on the city, and we're sure you'll find it just as engaging and fun as your previous tour! We look forward to having you join us again soon!

This was my second She Shapes History tour and just like the spy tour, it did not disappoint! Would highly recommend (even you don't think you're interested in history)

Fantastic afternoon! Our tour guide Sam shared so many amazing stories, and I learned about a completely different side of one of my favourite neighbourhoods. This tour is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys spy books, movies or history.

Host's response

Thank you, Maxine! We're so glad you had a fantastic afternoon exploring your favourite neighbourhood with Sam. It's amazing how a tour can uncover a completely different side and reveal so many fascinating stories! We couldn't agree more that this tour is a must for all the spy book, movie, and history enthusiasts out there ;-)

This tour is a must-do!

I’m not much of a history buff but walking around Barton, Kingston and Griffith and hearing about all the espionage that went on was fascinating! The tour was so good that by the end of the tour, I felt like I missed my calling as a spy and was ready to apply to ASIO!

This tour is a highly enjoyable way to explore Canberra and take in some mind-blowing history!

Host's response

Thank you, Luca! We're thrilled to hear that you found our tour so engaging and fascinating (even as a non-history buff!). We absolutely love that your guide was able to immerse you in Canberra's espionage history and ignite a newfound interest and potential career path!

Lucy was great! The tour was great! The tour flew by and I learnt so much. As a person that identifies as male but is curious to know more about this Capital of ours, I'm supremely glad I took the time to partake in this activity. I was gifted this experience as a gift and immediately upon finishing it I was wondering who I could gift it to in turn. Many thanks to the She Shapes History, it's so great to be witness people people share their passion. I rate this tour a Canberra must-do.

Though the weather was cold, Sita our tour guide was very warm and welcoming. Even having lived in Canberra for many years, I learnt lots and enjoyed the stories Sita told of the women involved in democracy. Thanks for a lovely tour.

What an amazing tour! So genuine and needed in our Parliament triangle. I can recommend this experience to any visitor or local. If you think you know Canberra, think again ;)

Amazing. Apparently Lucy hadn't been running the tour long, but you wouldn't have known. The tour was so well researched, and had many interesting anecdotes and side stories about the women and First Nations people who helped shape modern Australia.
