What is Mindfulness Samurai Shodo? サムライ書道って?

In my experience as a shodo instructor, I have seen brush work was hard for non Japanese since they just tried to follow the shapes of a Japanese word. That is called Shuji, and definitely not Shodo.

What do you imagine Samurai?
Yes, a samurai worrier with a sword. So, change the sword to a brush.

For kids over 10 years old, I will accommodate with your needs; e.g. a birthday party. The venue is within and above the busy heritage shopping building, The Block Arcade.

Knowledge Required
Beginners are welcome! No Japanese language knowledge required!
What you'll get
- All tools (ink, a brush, papers, mat etc) will be provided.
- You will learn how to draw hiragana and kanji and your name.
- Japanese handy fan (Uchiwa or Sensu) will be inclusive to the workshop fee to draw a word/phrase of your choice.
What to bring
No tools required. If you have your own Shodo calligraphy stuff, please bring them with you. You can bring any Japanese word/s to draw and practice.

Welcome to the world of black and white.

I started practicing Shuji Japanese calligraphy 40 years ago as it is compulsory in primary education which teaches children how to write Japanese words properly and neatly. At high school, I loved Shodo (way of drawing with a brush and ink) and was good at Shodo but my other talent (athletics) stopped me to pursue the way of Shodo.

In 2009, I resumed my Shodo journey and finally got a teaching qualification of artistic Shodo which allows you to express your insights and emotions (rather than Shuji educational shodo).

I have successfully organised Mindfulness Samurai Shodo and Creative Shodo Meetup group and have taught Shodo as art. Australian and international participants enjoy my teaching way and express their own insight with brush and black ink.

Let's disperse your passion on the brush and ink.

Yoshie was a great teacher. Very friendly and helped us learn the basics in the beginning to crafting a word into a fan and board. Highly recommend this class for anyone including people like us who have had no experience beforehand. Thanks Yoshie
