About SimoneI'm Simone Agius, the founder of simétrie ~ a Melbourne-based leather goods practice where I create sculptural bags using traditional crafts-woman-ship techniques. My journey into leather working began in 2011 during my honours year in fashion design, when I interned with local maker Busyman Bicycles and later completed a short course in bag making at RMIT.After years working as a designer for larger companies, I launched simétrie in 2019 to create bags that aligned with my values ~ supporting local artisans, using Australian materials, and championing ethical production. At simétrie, I've worked alongside artisans trained in France and New York, continuously refining my craft.Why I Love TeachingI'm passionate about local craft ecosystems, and teaching allows me to share the techniques I've developed over years of practice. Making has always been therapeutic for me, so I love creating space for both myself and my students to slow down and reconnect with the pleasure of working with our hands.A Bit About My PracticeI work exclusively with Australian leather from Leather Working Group certified tanneries, supporting local supply chains whilst maintaining the highest environmental standards. My work has been featured in publications including The Design Files and Fashion Journal.Since launching in 2019, I've guided many students through their first leather working projects, from complete beginners to those refining existing skills. Each workshop reflects my commitment to preserving traditional crafts.
