Surrealist Photomontage Workshop

Walk into a calm space and create a one-of-a-kind photomontage to take home

2 hours Class size 1 to 25 guests

  $115 - $335 ($335 per guest when you book for 1+ guests, $135/guest for 4+ guests, $115/guest for 10+ guests) (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

I invite you to step into a world of the imagined, the random, and the obscure—qualities loved and embodied by Surrealist artists. This art workshop is a 2-hour creative journey where you will be guided through techniques used by Surrealist artists to create a one-of-a-kind photomontage to take home.
After a few creative warm-ups, we will be choosing pages out of magazines to cut and assemble onto the page. At the end, we will share what you made (if you choose to, of course, no pressure) and take time to reflect.
This 2-hour art workshop includes:
  • Learning surrealism art techniques
  • Connecting with community
  • Personal reflection
  • A unique collage personal to you
Who is this for?
Anyone who wants to be more creative, meet people and socialise, get out of the house, or get off their phone. Surrealist enthusiasts, see you there.
Why join?
If you want to try something new in Brisbane or if you’re feeling a little (or a lot) stressed or overwhelmed with the state of things, either with the world or in your world. Doing art is a great way of making you feel better (there’s science behind it). Collage is accessible to anyone and a fun way to be creative even if you can’t draw!
What will you get out of it?
You’ll step into a room with everything set up ready for you to create. Being artistic will help you feel more relaxed and clear your mind. You’ll connect back with yourself and with the community, fueling your sense of belonging and confidence. Don’t forget you’ll walk away with your very own Surrealist photomontage.
Who’s facilitating?
Liegh (she/they) is an artist, expert facilitator, and lover of many things, including helping people be more creative. They find purpose in making the world a better place for all living things. They feel the most fulfilled when ideating, creating, and sharing. Liegh is part of a small team that organises a community-run, co-created festival each year, as well as a myriad of other local projects. They have a passion for finding connection to self and others in community through creativity. Liegh creates inclusive environments to foster self-expression, confidence, and self-regulation through attunement and empathy. They are the founder of The Presence Practise, a creative health initiative using the arts to improve wellbeing.

FAQ

Do I need to be creative to attend?
Not at all. This session is about play, not skill. Curiosity is enough. If you graduated kindergarten, then you’ll be able to do it. The skills needed for this workshop are cutting using scissors or a craft knife and glueing. If you need help, I’ll be there plus I’m sure your neighbour will be kind enough to lend a hand; in fact, it’s encouraged. If you see someone struggling, offer them help. This is a community after all.
I am an artist/creative person, what will I gain from attending this workshop?
Practising different mediums will help your current work or signature style by helping you see your subject matter through a new lens. Also, when was the last time you allowed yourself to play? Come on, cutting and gluing will delight your inner child and bring you joy. This is no high-stakes, no pressure, just a chance to explore and see what emerges.
What can I expect from this workshop?
Logistically: Guided facilitation and support available  You will be seated at tables in an upstairs room (involves navigating stairs) You will be using cutting and sticking tools Creatively: All art materials are supplied You will walk away with a unique piece of art you created  You will learn new art techniques (and a little art history) Socially: You will have a chance to meet people but it’s not expected  You might even make a friend Physically/psychologically: You will feel calmer and more relaxed You will feel more connected to yourself You will feel more emotionally regulated

Why Surrealism?
I’m glad you asked, [insert: TED Talk Intro Video Water Drop and Clapping…] The surrealist art movement emerged in response to the traumatising era of WWI. In an effort to make sense of the corrupt, hypocritical society, the avant-garde movement proposed a new kind of reality. Artists began using their dreams and the unconscious mind, heavily influenced by psychological theories to express, to create symbolic art. The rational being to distrust logic and shock the establishment. By liberating the conscious mind and allowing the absurd to take form in reality Surrealists have shown us how expressive images using symbols can be deeply cathartic and refreshing in times that feel absurd and defy logic.
What’s the science behind art making you feel better?
When we make art, blood rushes to the brain's medial prefrontal cortex, the reward center of our brain and results in higher dopamine levels elevating our mood. Additionally your parasympathetic nervous system is activated helping your body to return to a state of rest and calm.
How can I be supported after the workshop?
One-on-one reflection sessions are available for 2-weeks after the session. Bookings can be made with Leigh on The Presence Practise website.
