If you are looking for unique Melbourne workshops look no further! In this textiles class with Karhina Designs, you will learn Sashiko, a traditional Japanese stitching technique used to reinforce or mend clothes.

Sashiko is particularly decorative and can be used in all sorts of creative ways. You will also find out about Boro mending, a lovely layered method using Sashiko stitching.

During this workshop, you’ll learn about some traditional sashiko patterns and techniques but also look at modern alternatives and how to design your own. We will look at techniques for patching, tools, and materials needed, tips and tricks for preparing and stitching projects, and how to draw and stitch patterned sashiko.

We will begin with some sewing basics, learn sashiko running stitch and ways to apply your patterns and patches. Then it will be time to get creative and start stitching.

Because each mend will be different students will receive feedback on their personal mending projects and guidance throughout the process. If you don't have a garment to bring, that's okay. You can practice the techniques on provided fabric swatches.
