Join this collage art class, hosted by Ramiro Segovia in Melbourne!
In this workshop, you'll dive into a mix of visual storytelling methods and collage techniques, backed by guidance and supportive expertise the whole way through. Our tables are piled high with an incredible selection of vintage books, old-school magazines, and unique paper gems just waiting to be discovered, cut, and layered.
What to expect:
  • Each session kicks off around a shared table packed with vintage imagery, textures, and cutting tools. We introduce ourselves and reveal a specific, limiting rule or instruction for the day, a creative constraint designed to break perfectionism and unite everyone’s work under a single, unexpected theme.
  • While hands are busy arranging, cutting and pasting, we dive into deep, spontaneous conversations about the session's topic, sharing stories and laughs in a completely organic way.
  • To wrap up, we showcase our finished pieces. It is always incredible to see how the exact same prompt and materials spark entirely distinct, brilliant visual worlds, leaving everyone feeling deeply inspired and connected through shared creative expression.
Collage is entirely approachable and deeply satisfying, absolutely no prior art experience or creative background required.
So come on in, grab a seat, unwind with a drink in one hand and a pair of scissors in the other, and lose yourself in the process. Whether you’re coming by yourself, bringing a date, or hanging out with mates, this is a creative space unlike any other—and we can’t wait to help you unlock your inner artist.
What you'll get
  • We’ll start with a quick intro to collage styles and share some handy tips to spark your imagination before you begin.
  • Dive into a massive collection of vintage books, modern magazines and unique papers. All tools are provided, but feel free to bring your own photos or scraps from home.
  • You won't be on your own. You’ll get plenty of one-on-one to brainstorm ideas, get feedback and help your artwork shine.
  • To keep your energy up, we’ve got a tasty spread of snacks, light refreshments and dips from favourite local cafes.
  • You’ll head home with your own original art (or two, or three!). Plus, you can pack up your leftover paper scraps so you can keep creating at home.

While studying advertising at university, I started picking up gigs as a photographer. That instantly sparked my passion for visual language—photography, video, painting, all of it.
One day on my way home from uni, I noticed a pile of old, vintage Ecuadorian magazines left in a corner on my street. I couldn't just leave them there, so I took them home. That same week, I set up a casual collage session for my housemates and a few close friends.
It quickly turned into a Thursday night ritual. It became so popular that friends started inviting their friends, and every single week someone new would show up. For two and a half years, we hosted these "collage club sessions" right in our dining room.
Eventually, we outgrew the house and moved into a bigger space that we transformed into an independent cultural center dedicated to the arts—spanning dance, collage, drag, poetry, and more. We named it La Nube Casa Cultural. From there, the collage club kept growing, expanding out of our space to hold sessions at universities, museums, pubs, and art galleries.
Why I love teaching
I see teaching as a two-way street, a horizontal process. Traditional education often relies heavily on hierarchy, which has its place, but I prefer a human, one-to-one, equal exchange of information. When you approach it that way, you end up learning just as much as the person you are teaching. That constant, mutual discovery is exactly why I love it.
A little more about me & my journey
I’ve always been someone who wears many hats. Beyond visual arts, theater, Latin dance, and drag performance have been major passions of mine.
Running La Nube Casa Cultural really honed my ability to produce events and build genuine community around them. Over the years, we connected with art teachers and creative collectives from all over the world. A proud milestone for us was producing the very first ballroom events and voguing competitions for the local queer community in 2020. Through that work, we collaborated closely with national entities as well as international art collectives, creating spaces where people could truly connect and express themselves.
