Join Kathy in her home-based studio for two relaxed, hands-on classes where you’ll learn the fundamentals of lost wax casting and how to create a bezel or flush setting for a gemstone of your choice.
Over two 4-and-a-half-hour sessions, you’ll design, carve, and build your ring in wax, then learn how to create a setting for a gemstone of your choice. Your ring will then be sent away for professional casting in sterling silver.
Two weeks later, once your ring has returned from casting, you'll learn to finish and prepare your ring before setting your stone in your cast silver ring.
What you’ll create:
A sterling silver ring set with a gemstone using bezel or flush setting techniques.
Session One: Wax Carving and Setting Design
During the first session, you’ll be introduced to different types of wax and the tools used to shape and texture. You’ll design a ring with a bezel or flush setting, using a combination of wax carving and wax build-up techniques.
The first session focuses on exploring form, proportion, and structure, whether your design is intuitive and organic or more planned and refined.
You’ll learn to:
  • Measure and carve your ring size
  • Carve and build up wax using a range of tools and techniques
  • Design a wax ring suitable for a bezel or flush set stone
  • Add texture and surface detail
  • Prepare and refine your wax model for professional casting
Once complete, your wax ring will be sent away for casting. The course includes 15g of sterling silver, a gemstone of your choice, and all casting fees. If you’d like to create a heavier piece or work in gold, this can be arranged at an additional cost.
Session Two: Stone Setting and Finishing
Two weeks later, once your ring has returned from casting, you’ll learn how to refine and polish your ring and prepare your piece for setting the stone.
In this session, you’ll be guided through:
  • Cleaning up and refining your casting
  • Preparing settings for gemstones
  • Bezel and/or flush setting
  • Polishing
By the end of the course, you’ll take home a custom-made sterling silver ring set with a gemstone of your choice - designed, carved, set, and finished by you.
The workshop is structured and supportive, with clear guidance at every stage and plenty of space to experiment, learn, and enjoy the process.
Whether you’re looking to build solid foundational skills in lost wax and stone setting, or simply want to try something new, Kathy offers a relaxed, personalised experience that leaves you with both lasting memories and a meaningful piece of jewellery.

Kathy grew up in a very creative family. Her parents were potters and had a large workshop in the backyard. They always encouraged her to explore different arts and crafts. When Kathy was around 12 years old, her dad bought her a copper enamelling set. This was her first experience working with metals. She spent hours playing around, making jewellery in the corner of their pottery workshop.
Kathy went on to study Art Education at University, majoring in Jewellery Design and Silversmithing. She was fortunate to have the most patient and inspirational Silver Smithing teacher. It took her a lot of practice to really understand the process, but once she did, she was hooked.
After finishing her studies she moved to the UK where she worked in a school teaching primary aged children and coordinating the school’s Art program. During that time she took part in a workplace exchange program at the Tate Gallery in London.
Later, she moved back to Australia and studied a Master of Education - Gifted and Inclusive Education. She spent many years teaching support, extension, and creative development programs in schools whilst making jewellery on the side. Then at the end of 2017, she took a leap of faith, resigned from her teaching job and began making jewellery full time.
Kathy recently combined her two passions and now teaches private jewellery classes from her home based studio. She teaches traditional silversmithing, wax carving, gem setting, and metal clay.
Kathy describes creating handmade jewellery as a continuous journey in experimentation, problem solving, reflection, regrouping, and up-skilling. She aims to provide a fun, personalised experience where each student leaves feeling confident in their new skills.
