Join Kathy in her home-based studio for two fun, relaxed classes where you'll learn the fundamentals of lost wax casting.
During two 3-hour hands-on sessions, you'll create one or two sterling silver rings from start to finish.
Once you have booked in for the first session you will automatically be booked in to the second session running two weeks later.
This two-part wax carving workshop is a relaxed and practical introduction to the ancient process of lost wax casting. It's suitable for beginners as well as those with experience. As this is a private class for 1-3 students, Kathy is able to tailor the experience to achieve your goals.
You’ll learn how to carve, build up, shape, and texture wax to create one or two ring designs. These wax models are then sent off to be professionally cast in sterling silver.
Session one: Wax carving and design
In the first session, you’ll be introduced to different types of carving wax and the tools used to work with them, learning how to carve, melt, shape, and texture wax.
This session is about exploring the different types of wax, tools, and techniques, which can then be used to create your ring design. Whether your design is intuitive and organic or carefully planned, you’ll be guided through the process of translating your ideas into wax.
You’ll learn to:
  • Measure and carve ring sizes
  • Use a range of carving and sculpting tools and techniques
  • Build up wax or carve away to create form
  • Add texture and surface detail
  • Prepare and refine your wax ring for professional casting
Once your wax ring is complete, it will be sent away for casting. The course includes 15g of sterling silver and all casting fees. If you’d like to create a chunkier piece or work in gold, this can be arranged for an additional cost.
Session two: Finishing your ring
Two weeks later, once your rings are back from casting, you’ll learn how to refine and finish your cast pieces, transforming them into polished rings ready to wear.
You’ll be guided through:
  • Cleaning up your casting
  • Filing and refining details
  • Polishing your ring to a beautiful finish
By the end of the course, you’ll take home one or two custom-made sterling silver rings, entirely designed, carved, and finished by you.
The workshop is structured and supportive, with clear guidance at every stage and plenty of room to experiment and learn as you go.
Whether you're looking to learn the fundamental skills of lost wax carving from a fully trained and experienced teacher or want to try something new, Kathy will support and guide you to achieve success.
Kathy offers a relaxed, personalised experience for individuals or for those who would like to share an experience with someone special. This class will leave you with lasting memories and a keepsake piece of jewellery.

Kathy grew up in a very creative family. Her parents were potters and had a large workshop in the backyard. They always encouraged her to explore different arts and crafts. When Kathy was around 12 years old, her dad bought her a copper enamelling set. This was her first experience working with metals. She spent hours playing around, making jewellery in the corner of their pottery workshop.
Kathy went on to study Art Education at University, majoring in Jewellery Design and Silversmithing. She was fortunate to have the most patient and inspirational Silver Smithing teacher. It took her a lot of practice to really understand the process, but once she did, she was hooked.
After finishing her studies she moved to the UK where she worked in a school teaching primary aged children and coordinating the school’s Art program. During that time she took part in a workplace exchange program at the Tate Gallery in London.
Later, she moved back to Australia and studied a Master of Education - Gifted and Inclusive Education. She spent many years teaching support, extension, and creative development programs in schools whilst making jewellery on the side. Then at the end of 2017, she took a leap of faith, resigned from her teaching job and began making jewellery full time.
Kathy recently combined her two passions and now teaches private jewellery classes from her home based studio. She teaches traditional silversmithing, wax carving, gem setting, and metal clay.
Kathy describes creating handmade jewellery as a continuous journey in experimentation, problem solving, reflection, regrouping, and up-skilling. She aims to provide a fun, personalised experience where each student leaves feeling confident in their new skills.
