Wheel Throwing Course

Discover the meditative practice of using the pottery wheel

8 x 2.5 hours Location Bentleigh Class size 1 to 8 guests   $660 (Afterpay available)

Looking for fun Melbourne workshops that will revive your inner creative? Join Cones Studio's relaxing wheel throwing course for eight weeks of fun where you'll learn how to make your own unique ceramic pieces to keep or gift to loved ones!
Over the eight sessions, you'll learn the basic skills to master the pottery wheel from a friendly expert. Beginning with techniques to help you create simple forms, you'll then progress to making more intricate vessels. You'll also experiment with decorative techniques such as paint and transfer patterns, and how to glaze your pieces to prepare them for firing.
What this course will cover:
  • Introduction to the wheel, including cylinders, bowls and more
  • Different clay bodies
  • Your own focus and specialised pieces
  • Decorating and glazing your items
There are two different types of classes: Beginner and Intermediate. Of course, should you wish to choose a class different to our suggestions below or only have one preferred day, you are welcome to. We do then ask that you understand the style and level of class you have chosen, and set your expectations accordingly.
Beginner - If you want to slow it down and master the basics, we suggest jumping into a Beginner class, where we will work with more direct instruction and a stronger focus on the foundations of wheel throwing.
Intermediate - Here we will look at some techniques and skills beyond the basics that you may have already learned and practiced. You will still be guided through by your teacher, but there will be a level of independence and freedom as we know you may want to try out some new things as your confidence grows. This level is recommended if you have done at least 1 term program at Cones Studio or another ceramics studio.
If you're looking for unique gift experiences or things to do in Melbourne that will get you more connected with your local arts community, this wheel throwing course would be a great pick for you!
What you'll get
  • Guidance from an expert
  • All materials provided
  • All the ceramic pieces you've made to take home and display!

  • 5/5 from Estelle Liedemann, attended Jul 2023: I’ve loved learning to play with clay this year. Different teachers = different styles and techniques so don’t give up just because it doesn’t work out the first time. It’s a very addictive calming experience even when you’re frustrated by the wobbling wheel throwing - it makes you want to keep trying. I hope I’m able to continue learning. Try hand-building and wheel throwing too.
