Meet the lesbians who started Australia’s first gym for women. Learn about Australia’s first women’s ashes. Walk from Melbourne's CBD to Australia's most iconic sports ground. Experience all this and more in our Melbourne historical walking tour focusing on the history of women's sport in Melbourne.
Every Friday, Saturday & Sunday morning, join our guides who are shaping history today. Take home a sticker (or two!) & a list of the women and stories from the tour (because their names deserve to be remembered). Walk away inspired and ready to shape history yourself.
For too long, the stories of the women who helped make Melbourne Australia's sporting capital have gone untold.
Hidden amongst the skyscrapers in the CBD, the MCG, and the banks of the Yarra are the stories of the women who built Australian sport.
Walk from the heart of the city to Australia’s most iconic sporting venue, where women competed, campaigned, and refused to be benched. From suburban football clubs to the world stage, you’ll meet athletes, administrators, rebels, and everyday champions who dared to lace up and change the game around them.
Come ready to see Melbourne’s sporting legacy differently, and to carry these stories with you long after the walk ends. This tour will leave you feeling inspired, fired up, and ready to take the field yourself.
Over two hours, we’ll walk roughly 3.5km from the city to the MCG — stopping at the exact spots where women competed, organised, and refused to be told no. You’ll hear stories that didn’t make the history books, meet women who should be household names, and see some of Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks through a completely different lens.
By the end, you’ll never watch Australian sport the same way again.

We're on a mission to make Australian women's history accessible, entertaining, and engaging through walking tours, social media and one-off events.
She Shapes History started with a simple question – "Where are the women in the history of Australia?"
Bushrangers, convicts, diggers, blokes and battlers are often seen as the main characters of Australian history. In the story of our nation, women have frequently been cast as minor characters. Countless stories have been lost, left unrecorded, undervalued, and untold. As a society, it's so easy to forget that women were behind many of the moments that shaped Australia.
We believe that by recovering the remarkable stories of the women who shaped history, we can challenge our perception of women today. Closing the respect gap in Australian politics and culture today requires that we recognise and re-imagine what Australian women, particularly First Nations women, queer women, women of colour and women with disabilities, have achieved in the past.
While there are many ways to learn more about our history, there is nothing quite like a walking tour. Walking tours offer a unique opportunity to share history in an inclusive, accessible and non-judgmental context.
We use walking tours to highlight the diverse and often forgotten women behind the moments that shaped Australia. We want all Australians, no matter their race, gender or sexuality, to be able to see themselves in Canberra's landscape, in Australian history, and the story of our nation.
So, where are the women in the story of Australia? Well, as you'll discover on our tours, everywhere.
