WRITING & EDITING WORKSHOPS & EVENTS

Ridiculously fun
Unashamedly lowbrow
Naarm (Footscray)

BWC was born out of a desire to write with freedom and wild abandon … to write and create with no limitations, judgement, or self-imposed barriers.

We all have the right to suck … in fact, we MUST suck on the way to becoming GOOD!

It takes bravery to keep going when it feels like everything that comes out is utter rubbish … but there’s a reason we call it a writing PRACTICE.

Good writing comes with time and repetition, but it can be a really hard and lonely experience, so we created BWC.

A place for all kinds of writers to be together, try things, make mistakes, learn stuff, and have a massive amount of fun in the process.

BWC is more than a writing club. It’s a place to suck in safety, while growing, stretching yourself to be better, and surrounding yourself with folks who get it.

The small group made for lively interaction and individual attention. The lovely bookshop setting was inspiring. Tasty nibbles and glasses of wine were enjoyed as we learned how to plan and structure our writing (mainly novels, some memoir and faction).

I always gain something good from joining these Writing sessions. Yes I got my word count up but most importantly found my writing tribe.

This class was such a wonderful experience! Amanda held our hands along a beautiful journey which helped me uncover my own personal interests, values and areas of further exploration in my storytelling. She provided a sound structure to follow and the resources and activities were helpful in applying the new knowledge.

The venue is amazing as were the snacks and drinks! A nice touch to make the experience all the more enjoyable.

But most of all, I loved meeting the other students and hearing their insights and stories. It was inspiring to be surrounded by such creative people!

Fabulous writing session with a range of stimulating motivators - loved the ‘prompt scenarios’ this time. Learned so much from hearing where others are at in their writing journeys, and the suggestions given by facilitators and participants. Definitely my favourite part of this session.

The highlight of my week. BWC night inspires and nourishes me.

BWC has built a fantastic writing community here in Melbourne's west. The group is welcoming, supportive, and a heap of fun. If you're interested in writing, or just talking about writing and meeting other writers, this is the group for you.

Such a pleasure to spend precious time with like minded souls and feel like my story matters and I’m not alone in the struggle of writing it.
A beautiful Christmas/end of year party with a diverse range of people, beautiful food and venue and spectacular conversation. Highly recommend!

My first visit with the Bad Writers Club and I couldn’t have felt more welcome. Venue, snacks and drinks all brilliant! Teacher facility of conversation and recommendation of texts was particularly beneficial to our Writing our effing hearts out.

Friendly and welcoming. Venue pleasant and wine and snacks were a bonus. I will return next month.

Oh, how wondrous to be sitting at a table of writers again! All were welcome - new writers, good writers, writers with thousands of words, and writers (like me) who haven’t made the time to write in years. With the opportunity to enjoy wine and snacks, there is excellent facilitation, warm up exercises and then an hour to just write (as they say) your effing heart out. My only regret is not sharing when given the second opportunity… what a great session and lovely bunch of people.

Such a fun, friendly, inclusive space! The teachers were welcoming and created a safe space for all, including newbies like myself, that was encouraging and supportive.

It was a beautiful local venue (shout out to The Chestnut Tree Bookshop, West Footscray), with the teachers thoughtfully providing plenty of tasty refreshments, so was really great value for money.

I loved the writing prompts and it was great to just find a community vibe for one's writing practice, to socialise and also share one another's work (if we wanted) and also just fuel and fire up the love of writing your heart out just for the effing sake of it :)

Great setting in a local bookshop, with a warm welcome from Ash and Donita. It was so good being with a group of likeminded people, all keen on words and writing. I'll be back!

Really lovely workshop that helped me get to know my characters on a deeper level. I'm going to use the techniques I learned for years to come.
Amanda was a great facilitator and teacher, and was a font of knowledge, especially when it came to plot devices and character arcs.
The other students were also engaging and insightful, and I loved our diversity.

Thank you!

The materials were great, Amanda our teacher was lovely and welcoming, and the location was beautiful and conducive to creativity.

I'm so looking forward to exploring the Storytelling world more with more Bad Writer's Club workshops.

This course provided by the fabulous Donita and Ashlee aka The Bad Writers Club is fantastic!
Amanda is an excellent teacher who provided useful tips and activities to help prompt and get the creative flair happening.
I left each week feeling inspired and excited about writing. I now have a fantastic structure and insight in how to approach my writing. It had a fun, relaxed and engaging atmosphere.
The Chestnut Tree was the perfect setting for this course.
I am very much a novice writer who is curious about writing and storytelling. I have completed the course feeling inspired and ready to write write write. I would recommend this course to absolutely anyone who already has a piece of writing underway or someone who is curious and looking to get creative with words.
Thank you to all involved.

Cozy and welcoming venue, open and encouraging facilitator, perfect amount of prompts and free writing time. Fab snacks. Chill group of people. Really enjoyed the spaciousness and permission to share or not share. All in all, it was an awesome space to put my head down and commit to some focused writing time. Everyone's collective focus enabled me to avoid distractions and get in a zone. I'll definitely be going again.

I was finding it really hard to make the time to start writing and the 2h of BWC were just amazing to focus and get work done!
Ashley gave us incredible prompts that helped my imagination to take shape into a story.
The venue, the drinks and the energy from other attendees is very inspiring.
I highly recommend it

A lovely space to work in for a quiet, calm, creative afternoon. I would recommend this class for people who are looking for a space to work on pre-existing ideas or copy, rather than as a class for beginners looking to learn as it is almost entirely self-guided (although the hosts are on hand to answer any questions or help).

The highlight for me was towards the end when some of the class read out what they'd been working on (there was no pressure on anyone to share if they didn't want to.)

The venue is a gorgeous bookshop with snacks provided so a fun, no-fuss and reasonably priced way to spend an afternoon.

Imbi’s class was the first writing workshop I’ve ever been to, and what a lovely way to start my journey! She was funny, kind and insightful and her exercises to help us get into the minds of our characters (especially ones who were so different from us) will be integral to my future stories.

Also, shout out to the Chestnut Tree Bookshop - what a beautiful place!

Thank you so much for the fun workshop!

Great workshop that gathered a wonderful group of creative, friendly people together in a gorgeous venue. Imbie’s ideas and tips were so helpful - I hadn’t written fiction for ages but walked away with a little piece I was proud of and that I had fun writing ☺️ Thanks to Donita and Ash for organising and hosting!

Imbi was very warm and friendly, and created a relaxed and encouraging environment for writing. I enjoyed the initial exercise of sharing with one other workshop participant, as that gave me the chance to get to know others a little. Although not my primary objective for the attending the session, getting to know other writers is still part of my reason for doing a group activity.
I appreciated the fact that there was no pressure to share or 'perform'. The strategies used to encourage us to write were fabulous, and I found they really did stimulate my imagination and creative flow. It was great to actually WRITE, and not just listen to someone tells us how they do it. (although I also learn lots from listening to those with more experience).
The venue was great for creative stimulation and I like that we sat around a table so we could see each other. The food was a real treat, thanks.

Love the character sheets and all your different ways of thinking about characters. This loose structure combined really effectively with the random prompts to spark my imagination. Thank you.

Both Ashley and Donita were very welcoming. The format wasn’t exactly as I had expected however I took away some good tips and suggestions including a recommendation for the book Writing Down the Bones which I’ve since bought and learning from. I intended to continue with future workshop with the ‘Bad Writers Club’

What a great afternoon spent with like-minded writers! Writing can be an individual and lonely activity but it doesn’t have to be and having a community to write with in a dedicated space is amazing. Thank you for a fantastic afternoon!

Such a fun and welcoming environment. I enjoyed the writing prompts and to have time to focus on getting words into the page in the company of other writers. The venue was also creatively stimulating.
