The ancient art of hand weaving is such a wonderful way to wind down and relax, take time out of your everyday life and do something creative for yourself.
Do you love all things related to the beach?
In this half day weaving workshop in Perth, you’ll learn the super simple steps to create your own beach or ocean themed small wall hanging.
Here’s what you’ll learn:
  • First you’ll discover how to use all the weaving tools and choose the easiest ones for you.
  • Then you’ll start by creating a simple fringe, using a Rya knot.
  • Next you'll create the body of your weaving, using a colour palette of blues, teal, white and creams, so you create that feeling of being by the sea.
  • Then you’ll take the weaving off the loom and finish it off by sewing in ends and adding a hanging pole; so you can proudly take it home.
  • But not before you embellish your weaving with driftwood, shells and beads in any way you’d like.
And don’t worry if you’ve never done anything like this before - Sophie will be guiding and assisting you every step of the way!
This weaving workshop is perfect for you if:
  • You’re looking for something relaxing.
  • You love trying new art or crafty things.
  • You’ve always wanted to give weaving a try.
  • You’re a total beginner and happy to learn.
  • You’re looking for something different.
  • You’re ready to have fun with wool!
Indulge in a glass of wine (or non-alcoholic beverage) and a light grazing platter while you work and take home a vibrant mini weaving handmade by you!
This is the ‘Beach Themed’ class where you’ll use a simple colour palette, and embellish with shells, beads and driftwood.
If you’d prefer something less prescriptive, check out the other classes: ‘Freestyle Weaving & Wine Workshop’ or the ‘Full Day Weaving For Beginners’.
Other listings coming soon include ‘Rainbow Weaving Workshop’ and ‘Nature Landscape Weaving Workshop’.
Sophie offers small public or private classes in her studios, where you’ll get plenty of 1-2-1 help.
As well as private or hens parties at your own (minimum of 6 people).
Or larger groups in a venue to be determined according to your requirements.
Knowledge required
This beach themed weaving class is for total beginners, so there is no need to have any experience or be ‘artistic’ in any way. Just turn up ready to switch off, relax and have lots of fun. (Though it may help if you can thread a sewing needle…)

What you'll get
  • You will get the use of a wooden hand loom and weaving tools.
  • Ocean themed coloured yarns, driftwood pieces, shells and beads.
  • One glass of wine or non-alcoholic beverage (you can BYO after that).
  • There will be a light grazing platter, either sweet or savoury depending on the time of your workshop.
  • A chance to browse through Sophie’s original weaving collection, plus any work in progress in the studio.
  • Oh and of course your super patient and experienced teacher!
What to bring
There is nothing specific you need to bring, just yourself (and maybe a friend). Although you are welcome to bring any found beach items like driftwood, special shells etc to make your weaving more personal.
You can BYO additional beverages if you wish. Or any snacks if you have dietary needs.

Hi - I’m Sophie Mahir, former semi abstract acrylic painter, now turned fibre artist, originally from the UK and now happily living and creating my weavings in sunny Perth, Australia.
I have always loved different yarns and textiles and started my own knitting business when I was just 18. Going on to gain a Waldorf Art Teaching Diploma and teaching children art and crafts for 8 years; till the desire to create my own art took over and I went full time as a professional painter.
From there I went deeper into business, qualifying as a life & business coach and trainer; specialising in women’s business start-ups and eventually setting up online as an art business coach and educator.
In early 2024 I made the decision to focus back into my creativity and officially making the switch into fibre art with my weavings and weaving workshops in Perth.
I'm passionate about living creatively and enabling others to explore their full potential too. I believe in the power of doing something artistic not just for your own expression; but also for relaxing, mindfulness and improving your mental and physical health.
