Beekeeping Class: Flow Hive Fun

Learn Flow Hive beekeeping with ongoing support, advice & bee supply!

6 hours Location Bowral Class size 1 to 10 (public classes), 8 to 12   $299 (Afterpay available)

The Flow Hiveâ„¢ has revolutionised backyard beekeeping and opened up beekeeping to enthusiasts around the world.
This 5.5-hour workshop is designed for total newbees (sorry!) to beekeeping who are thinking about getting a Flow Hiveâ„¢, or have one sitting in their garage unassembled and don't know where to start. We'll cover everything from what to order, how to assemble it, where to put it, and how to get your first bees.
It's the PERFECT time to start your beekeeping journey as there's lots of flowering and you've got time to get your head around these fascinating and important pollinators.
This is a very hands-on workshop where you'll taste honey from different floral sources, suit up and visit Hamish's bees, get to look at several built Flow Hives in Hamish's apiary, and open one up for a standard inspection.
You'll walk away with enough information to confidently start your beekeeping journey. Hamish also offers a hive building, management, and mentoring service so you will be able to keep developing your skills beyond this initial workshop.
We stock the Flow Hive in both a flat pack and pre-built version.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 6 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we may cancel the session; if that happens, we'll inform you and let you choose between a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

  • 5/5 from Tony Bradford, attended Oct 2026: Having done this course over a year ago, it was a great refresher before getting my first hive. Darren was very knowledgable and his personal experience was greatly respected. I especially loved the new digs, it is a great facility and I can't recommend it more highly.
  • 5/5 from Stephen Vey-Cox, attended Sep 2026: My daughter bought me a ticket for this Beekeeping Class as a Father's Day present. We live in Bowral, but on the western side of the railway line. We have a perfect spot in our yard, for a hive, away from neighbours and the house. You can learn a lot about bees, beekeeping, honey, and hives from watching YouTube videos, but nothing beats getting your 'noddy' suit on and getting among the bees, hands on experience covering all the aspects you need to consider / know should you want to embark on getting a hive. The course runs for roughly 4 - 5 hours, initially covering the life of bees, and all things associated with keeping them (and keeping them happy). You get to sample a variety of honeys, appreciating the flavour defined by the flowers the bees harvest pollen from. Then it's time to get suited up and hands on experience. One important aspect covered was keeping the hive healthy, no overcrowding (leading the bees to potentially swarm), but more around the Varroa mite. How to test for it and then how to treat for it. There was a good group of people, around 15 at the course, all got on well, all having to ask as many questions as needed. There's a lot of work required to keep bees if you want to do it properly and have a happy hive. The course brought me to the conclusion it isn't something I can dedicate enough regular time to living between Sydney and Bowral. I'd highly recommend doing this course, should you be in the mind to have your own hive and honey.
