I had a wonderful time, whittling was so relaxing and I feel like I learned enough about the basics to continue building on skills in my own time. Luckily there were some kits available to purchase after class, so I'm continuing to work on my next piece after I finished the tree in class.

  • 5/5 from Chris Felstead, attended Oct 2025: I attended the beginner's workshop. Shlomit's teaching skills are excellent, and the lesson was laid out in such a way that it was a pleasure to learn. I took away several classes, the most important one being that whittling is great for giving your brain a rest and slowing down. In practice, the teaching of checking the grain and sketching out your work on the wood was a breakthrough for me. Working with Shlomits' work all around us was inspirational. An amazing experience!

This workshop covered all the basics; knife safety, carving techniques, types of wood, structure of timber, understanding grain, transferring an image from 2D to working a carving in 3D, finishing techniques, knife sharpening, and most importantly to trust the process and have fun. I absolutely loved this workshop! Shlomit gave me confidence, was so helpful and has renewed my passion for creating art with wood. It was a great day with a great bunch of people. Thank you Shlomit!

Hi, I'm Shlomit, a professional wood carver and chainsaw carver from the Yarra Valley.
I've been working with wood since 2015 and usually create large projects for schools and councils using chainsaws and power tools.
I LOVE the peace of mind that whittling gives me – the quiet, dustless joy of seeing a piece of timber turn into an animal or a character in my hands – and I love to share my knowledge.
There's nothing better than seeing the satisfied smiles of students who have successfully created their own carving. I see whittling as a way to combine wood carving and active meditation, allowing us to be fully present in the moment.
My work is regularly exhibited in the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show Sculpture Exhibition and won the Art Almanac subscription prize in 2022.
