Bonsai Class for Beginners

Learn the artistic, horticultural, and technical process of designing and maintaining your very own bonsai

1.5 hours Class size 1 to 45 guests

  $120 (Afterpay available)

Have you ever wanted to learn the art of bonsai? Well, this class is perfect for you!
Bonsai is a traditional Japanese practice of growing miniature trees in containers, offering a calming way to reconnect with nature while creating something beautiful by hand.
This hands-on workshop is designed for beginners, guiding you through the process in a relaxed and welcoming environment where you can slow down and enjoy the experience.
The word bonsai translates to ‘plant in a tray, ’ and involves carefully managing a tree’s growth through techniques like pruning roots and branches, and cultivating it within a compact container.
Beginning bonsai is about more than just shaping a tree, it’s about imagining its future form. Over time, bonsai can become deeply meaningful, often passed down through generations as living works of art that represent patience, care, and balance.
In this class, you will put together your very own bonsai tree.
What you’ll learn:
  • An introduction to the art of Bonsai
  • What types of plants can be used for Bonsai
  • How to select a pot size for repotting
  • Preparing your pot for planting
  • Root trimming and repotting your plant
  • Pruning and wiring to shape your bonsai
  • Care and maintenance advice
At the end, you will take home your bonsai tree planted in a container, as well as the confidence to continue caring for the plant in years to come!

We both left with our own little bonsai trees and a beautiful memory. I’d highly recommend this class to anyone wanting to try something new!

  • 5/5 from Jemma, attended Aug 2026: Enjoyable class! Great for all ages. The instructor Dion was friendly and communicative. A great starting point into the wonderful world of bonsai! I wish the class was a bit longer due to the varying size of the plants that were offered - some needing more time and pruning. Overall a beautiful space to learn in
  • 5/5 from Anthony Chan, attended Aug 2026: The class was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot in a very short time. We selected plants, prepared the pot and roots (teasing and trimming), planted and wired the tree to shape it, and then trimmed the branches. The teacher did well to manage a large group of people. I feel motivated and pretty confident to do this on my own. Thank you :)

  • 3/5 from Clementine Warren-Smith, attended Jan 2026: Unfortunately very hard to hear and came away with barely any knowledge about how to take care of my bonsai! They had probably 40 people so not a very personal experience. My daughters bought this class for me for Christmas and although the organisers were nice, the class was poorly run.

  • 5/5 from Misha Coleman, attended Nov 2025: Fun, easy workshop. Team created a welcoming environment. Patient, warm assistance with questions. And a lovely atmosphere developed with strangers at our table—everyone admiring each others’ plants. I’ve taken many workshops and this is one of my most favourite.
  • 5/5 from Damian Wilson, attended Nov 2025: I recently attended a beginner bonsai class with my friend, who’s new to the hobby, and we both had a fun and enjoyable day! The session was well-organised, engaging, and a great balance of learning and hands-on practice. It was also lovely meeting other people who share an interest in bonsai. The facilitators were professional, patient, and very helpful, making the whole experience approachable for beginners. I’d definitely recommend this class to anyone curious about starting their bonsai journey!
  • 5/5 from Robyn Connor, attended Oct 2025: I purchased the beginner Bonsai class for my best friends' 50th birthday surprise. We had the best time! The facilities were so clean and beautiful and the teacher gave us a history about Bonsai before we started. The class was a nice size which was great as Kiara, the teacher had plenty of time to answer questions. Kiara's instructions were clear and easy to understand and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
  • 5/5 from Kate Dear, attended Oct 2025: Enjoyed the class. The pace was just right and it was lovely having a cute tree to bring home, hopefully to grow and thrive.

  • 5/5 from Steph Lai, attended Oct 2025: The instructors were lovely! I loved that they covered the history of bonsai. One recommendation I have is for the instructors to occupy a spot in the middle of the table rather than at one end so it’s easier for everyone to see what they’re demonstrating, though in my class there was another instructors who walked around and was happy to repeat all the instructions so it didn’t affect us too much. I also wish there were more different pots to choose from. But overall it was a great experience! I recommend getting there early so you have first pick of the plants and the colour pot you want!
  • 4/5 from Stephen Burke, attended Oct 2025: Good teacher Gave some history of Bonsai And not too technical information
  • 5/5 from Rhonda Ebsary, attended Sep 2025: Oh was really great workshop. Very informative, I even learnt new things and I have grown Bonsai for years. Great teachers and they come around to give advice on pruning Nd styling. Recommend this workshop to anyone new to Bonsai or seasoned.
