Pressed Flower Workshop – the Art of Flower Preservation

Preserve the flowers you like – with skills you’ll use for a lifetime.

2 hours Class size 2 to 10 guests

  $120 - $130 ($135 per guest when you book for 1 guest, $130/guest for 2+ guests, $120/guest for 4+ guests) (Afterpay available)

If you’ve ever wished you could keep a flower forever – its shape, its colour, its beauty – then this workshop is for you.
Come and join me for a relaxing, hands-on session where I’ll show you exactly how to press fresh flowers so they last for years. You’ll even take home your own professional flower press kit (worth $90) so you can keep creating long after the class.
We’ll start with the basics, but you’ll quickly see that pressing flowers isn’t just “put them in the press and wait.” There’s an art to it – a mix of technique and a few clever tricks – that makes all the difference to the way your flowers look once they’re dry.
In this workshop, you’ll learn how to:
  • Treat and prepare fresh flowers so they dry faster and more evenly.
  • Use your flower press step-by-step (I’ll walk you through the whole process).
  • Reactivate and reuse your press kit over and over again.
  • How to tell if your flowers are perfectly dried and ready to use.
  • Store your pressed flowers so they keep their beautiful colours for as long as possible.
We’ll provide plenty of gorgeous seasonal flowers and greenery for you to press, but if you’ve got something special – maybe from your own garden or a bouquet you’ve received – feel free to bring it along.
And while I’d love to send you home with completely dried flowers, pressing does take time. The ones you make in class will still need a few days at home to finish drying, but don’t worry – I’ll give you clear instructions so they turn out beautifully.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll not only have a flower press kit you can use forever, but also the skills and confidence to press flowers like a pro. Plus, you’ll have so many ideas for what to do with them – from art frames and bookmarks to greeting cards, resin jewellery, and more.
It’s a fun, calming, and creative way to spend a couple of hours, and you’ll leave with a new hobby you can enjoy all year round.

Hi, I’m Susan Zhao, a Melbourne-based artist and the founder of Susan’s Pressed Flower Art Studio. I’ve been working with pressed flower art and cyanotype since 2013, and I absolutely love sharing this peaceful, nature-inspired craft with others.
My journey started pretty simply — I was spending a lot of time in my garden and felt sad seeing beautiful fresh flowers die so quickly. I wanted to find a way to capture that fleeting beauty, so I began pressing them. What started as a personal hobby slowly grew into something much bigger — and by 2024, I’d launched my own studio, turning those little pieces of nature into art.
I use only real flowers and leaves (most of them grown in my own garden), and I carefully press and design each piece by hand. A lot of people don’t realise how much creativity and care goes into pressed flower art — from the colour choices to the layout, it’s a very thoughtful process. I also combine it with cyanotype, which adds dreamy blue tones and makes each piece feel really timeless.
Teaching has become one of the most rewarding parts of what I do. I love seeing people slow down, get creative, and surprise themselves. My classes are relaxed, beginner-friendly, and full of little tips I’ve picked up along the way. Whether you’re here to learn a new skill, enjoy a mindful moment, or make a special handmade gift, I’m here to help you feel confident and inspired.
Over the past couple of years, I’ve taken part in art shows like the Victor Harbor Art Show, Bendigo Art Show, and Frankston Art Show — and I also run regular market stalls around Melbourne, including at Heide Market and Docklands District Makers' Market, St Kilda Market, Coburg Maker Design Market, and more.
I also offer custom flower preservation — turning wedding bouquets or farewell flowers into meaningful keepsakes. It’s always such a privilege to be trusted with those memories.
If you’re curious about the world of pressed flowers, I’d love to have you in one of my classes. Let’s get creative together and make something beautiful from nature!
