  • 5/5 from Claire Zhao Nan, attended Aug 2026: I had such a lovely time at the Ballerina with a Paintbrush workshop! I brought along a couple of second-hand wooden pieces I’d picked up from an op shop — a tray and a little drawer box — and it was so nice to give them a new life. The host was incredibly welcoming and explained everything really clearly. All the materials were provided and the workshop was very beginner-friendly. I had quite a few questions along the way and she was so patient and happy to explain things again whenever I needed. We even had a lovely morning tea together, which made the whole experience feel really relaxed and friendly. I’d definitely recommend this workshop if you’re curious about this kind of craft but are a complete beginner. I really appreciated how generously she shared her knowledge and tips. Thanks so much for such a lovely morning!
  • 5/5 from Christine Stewart, attended Jul 2026: Teacher was very knowledgeable. Easy to chat to and I learned a lot. Highly Recommend.
  • 5/5 from Silva Yan, attended Mar 2026: really good teacher! Amazing class!
  • 4/5 from Eugene Shaw, attended Oct 2025: Teacher was very welcoming friendly and informative. She helped me overcome my anxiety and encouraged me to experiment with the paint. She has a huge range of materials and examples of her work. A lovely Morning tea was also provided.
  • 5/5 from Rosemary Dalton, attended Aug 2025: A great class and am thrilled with my newly painted table. Gaylene was amazing too. Highly recommend to others wanting to transform their dated brown furniture.
  • 5/5 from Laura Damasco Sa, attended Jul 2025: I’ve tried painting furniture before but wanted to learn some techniques. The class pace was flexible but it provided enough time to go through all stages of our projects. I fully enjoyed the class and the teacher gave us a lot of tips. Materials were provided and available if we wanted to purchase anything.
  • 5/5 from Kati Krebs, attended Jun 2025: I loved it, the class was informative and I painted to drawers. I loved the advice and suggestions, I even got to do some stencilling to pretty up the sides of my drawers. I was able to purchase all the supplies I needed to finish my projects. One dresser, one wash table. We also had morning tea and it was nice to meet the other participants too. I finished of the first piece at home this afternoon.
  • 5/5 from Deb Leeds, attended Jun 2025: Thoroughly enjoyed my beginner's furniture painting workshop. Lots of great information shared and a lovely morning tea provided. Thank you Gaylene!

  • 5/5 from Victoria Vinning, attended Feb 2025: Perfect class. I’d been thinking about trying a painting class like this for so long. This was a perfect starter class, I took along a wooden desk riser with drawers and it was the perfect size to prep, paint and finish in the 3hr workshop. Gaylene is so helpful and provides everything you could need to complete your piece.
  • 5/5 from Denise Whitney, attended Feb 2025: I can definitely recommend the beginners workshop. It’s a great way to learn the basics and practice on your own piece with Gaylene’s guidance.

You don’t have to be an expert to update your own furniture. All you need is some quality paint, a good brush and some good advice. In my workshops, I will teach you upcycling techniques that will enable you to transform a piece of tired furniture: from trash to treasure!
Being creative - combining art through colour, design and creative thinking - with interesting yet discarded pieces of furniture, has been food for my soul. In a former life (pre-kids), I was a principal dancer with The Birmingham Royal Ballet, and lead dancer with the Australian Ballet. Being immersed in ballet’s theatrically creative environment inspired my ‘look’ and prompted my desire to further pursue my interest in design with the Interior Design Institute of London.
What I bring to you in my upcycling workshops, are years of creativity and upcycling experience through my business: Ballerina with a Paintbrush. I specialise in all projects which paint can bring alive; from furniture to even kitchen makeovers! My workshops will give you the knowledge and tools to begin your own upcycling addiction.
