Mid Autumn Festival Lantern Making Workshop

Celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival with an afternoon of lantern making, colour, tea, and a little moon-inspired magic.For this special limited-run workshop, we’ll be giving our usual rattan and mulberry paper lantern-making class a playful Mid-Autumn Festival twist. Think glowing moons, colourful traditional lantern shapes, koi fish, and whimsical sculptural forms made from rattan and translucent paper.You’ll start with lengths of rattan and sheets of colourful mulberry paper, then slowly turn them into a lantern of your own. A small selection of festival-inspired templates will be available to help you get started, or you can use them as a jumping-off point for something more imaginative.You might make a round moon lantern, take inspiration from traditional Chinese lantern forms, create a colourful koi fish, or invent your own shape entirely. We’ll have a range of paper colours to play with, so you can layer, contrast, and experiment as your lantern takes shape.Once your rattan frame is complete, you’ll cut and apply the mulberry paper by hand. Some parts are a little fiddly, some are satisfyingly repetitive, and there’s plenty of time to settle into the rhythm of making.Along the way, we’ll embrace the celebratory atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival with tea and mooncakes while we work. It’s a relaxed opportunity to make something with your hands, spend time with friends or someone you love, and mark the festival in a creative way.The class is limited to eight people, so your teacher, Martina, will be around to help with trickier joins, problem-solve with you, and offer guidance as your lantern develops.The best part comes at the end when the LED goes in and everyone switches on their lanterns for the first time. Colourful mulberry paper takes on a completely different character once illuminated, creating a warm little glow to take home with you.No previous experience is needed—just a willingness to work with your hands, experiment with colour, and spend a few hours making something with patience and care.This is a special Mid-Autumn Festival edition with a limited number of sessions and places available over the long weekend.Please note:

• Your lantern will still be slightly damp when you leave the workshop, so it will be more fragile than usual and should be handled with care. Allow at least 12 hours for it to dry fully.
• Lanterns will generally be sized to sit comfortably on a bedside table, shelf, or display surface. If you’d like to make something larger, extra materials can be purchased on the day, subject to time and availability.

• Your own finished sculptural lantern, shaped and made by you during the workshop, with a battery-powered LED included.
• A small amount of complimentary mulberry paper to take home, along with the recipe for the handmade glue used in the workshop. You can use these for repairs or to finish your lantern at home if you run out of time.
