Introduction to Silk Fan Painting

Introduction to Silk Fan Painting

Begin with a short introduction to traditional Chinese silk fan painting. You will learn about the materials used and how colour behaves differently on silk compared to paper. Your silk fan will already feature a hand-drawn ink outline prepared by the teacher.

With the outline already prepared, you'll focus on colouring the silk fan using traditional Chinese Gongbi painting methods.

Build Harmony and Depth Through Colour

Continue layering colour to create depth and harmony within the design.

Complete and Take Home Your Silk Fan

Complete and Take Home Your Silk Fan

After the colouring process is complete, your silk fan is gently presented in a gift box, ready to take home. This moment brings the experience to a close, celebrating both the artwork you've created and the quiet, meditative process of Gongbi painting.

In this silk fan painting class, you will be guided through a calm and elegant introduction to traditional Chinese painting on silk. Working on a round silk fan, you'll experience the gentle, meditative rhythm of Gongbi-inspired colouring, focusing on patience, balance, and mindful brushwork.
To ensure a relaxed and enjoyable experience for beginners, the ink outline is carefully prepared by the teacher before class. This allows you to fully focus on colouring techniques and the unique qualities of painting on silk, without the pressure of drawing.
Throughout the session, you'll learn how traditional Chinese pigments behave on silk, how to control water and brush pressure, and how to apply colour slowly and layer by layer. Step-by-step guidance is provided as you build soft tones, gentle transitions, and a harmonious overall composition.
The emphasis is on process rather than perfection, allowing you to slow down and enjoy the quiet focus that silk painting naturally encourages. The class is suitable for complete beginners and requires no prior experience.
By the end of the session, you will have completed a hand-painted silk fan, carefully presented in a gift box to take home. If your silk fan is prepared as a gift, a complimentary greeting card printed with the studio logo is provided, allowing you to add a personal message and complete the gift beautifully.
Please note: Guests attending the same workshop will paint the same theme to ensure everyone can follow the demonstrations together and enjoy the best learning experience.
Take your time and enjoy the process. If you need a little extra time to finish your silk fan, you're welcome to complete it at one complimentary Friday Open Studio Session.
Note: The class usually runs around 3 hours, giving everyone time to work at a comfortable pace without rushing.

My journey with Chinese Gongbi painting began in my childhood, growing up surrounded by traditional art, stories, and the quiet beauty of nature. But the true turning point came in early 2023, when I had a vivid dream that felt unmistakably spiritual. In the dream, a gentle yet firm voice reminded me said, “Have to be an artist before die.” I woke up with a profound sense of clarity and purpose. From that moment, I knew that creating art—and sharing its beauty with others—was the path I was meant to follow.
Gongbi has become both my meditative practice and my creative language. I enjoy guiding students through the calm, focused process of fine line-work, subtle shading, and delicate colour layering. Watching their confidence grow as they discover this ancient art form is truly inspiring.
As a bilingual Chinese artist working on Xuan paper, silk, and traditional silk fans, I bring authentic materials, cultural insight, and personal artistic experience into every session. My teaching is grounded in patience, encouragement, and the belief that everyone can create something beautiful.
In addition to hosting regular studio classes, I recently delivered a guest speech and live demonstration for the Decoupage Guild Australia. In early 2025, my artwork was also featured in the HOPE art exhibition with Whittlesea Council.
