About Your Tutor, Clive Sinclair
Born in Melbourne, Clive Sinclair is a celebrated, multi-award-winning artist with an extraordinary career spanning decades. A highly respected figure in the Australian art world, Clive is an exhibiting member of the historic Twenty Melbourne Painters Society, an Elected Fellow of the Victorian Artists Society (VAS), and a member of the Watercolour Society of Victoria. His prestigious background includes winning the VAS Victorian Artist of the Year in 2011 and the Members’ Choice Award in 2015. He is also a proud member of Melbourne’s historic Savage Club (founded in 1894), where his own artwork hangs alongside legendary Australian masters like Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton.
Beyond his studio practice, Clive is a sought-after judge for major national art prizes, including the Alice Bale Award, and frequently lectures on prominent art movements. Having led painting tours through France, Italy, Spain, and the Australian outback, Clive is a master of capturing the landscape. He possesses a deep technical mastery of colour, texture, and light, often utilising classical techniques - such as priming canvases in rich, warm undertones - to make his palettes truly sing.
Above all, Clive is dedicated to the philosophy of simplicity. He strives to find the bare, poetic essence of a subject, capturing fleeting light on the canvas before it disappears.
Clive’s Creative Ethos
"I always try to find the simple essence of a painting, capturing the fleeting light before it disappears. Whether I am laying down an oil wash or working on canvas, striving for that pure simplicity is a process that still fills me with absolute wonder and joy."
Techniques You'll Learn
  • Simplification: how to strip a complex landscape down to its minimalist essence.
  • Tonal priming: the professional technique of tinting your canvas with warm undertones to make your final colours sing.
  • Capturing light: how to paint the atmospheric light of a scene.
  • Colour mixing and temperature: expert guidance on balancing warm and cool tones to dictate depth, mood, and focus.
  • Confident canvas work: the technical brushwork and finishing details to pull a striking, cohesive acrylic painting together.
