Hi, I’m Yi-Jung Hsien (Shen), the maker behind MUMU 木沐 Woodcraft Studio in Brisbane.My journey into wood carving grew from a simple love of working with natural materials and making things by hand. I enjoy the process of taking a simple piece of wood and slowly discovering what it can become. For me, carving is not about making something perfect — it is about slowing down, paying attention, and enjoying the process.What I especially love about wood carving is that everyone approaches the same piece of wood differently. A small change in the shape, texture or finish can give a handmade piece its own personality.I also love sharing this process with other people. Teaching gives me the chance to introduce beginners to something that might initially look difficult or intimidating, and then see their confidence grow as they make something with their own hands.I have also developed and delivered creative workshops through community and festival settings, including Woodford Folk Festival and Caboolture Regional Art Gallery, where I have taught participants how to complete a simple wood carving project within a workshop session.My goal is to make wood carving feel approachable — you don't need to be an experienced artist or woodworker to enjoy it. You just need a little curiosity, some patience, and a willingness to have a go.I’d love to share a piece of wood, a carving knife and a few hours of creativity with you!
