What you'll do
Have you always wanted to learn how to sew? Join our one-day class today!Our "Make a Floor Cushion in a Day" workshop is perfect for beginners and intermediate sewists. You will gain the confidence to begin making clothes, homewares, and crafts on the sewing machine and take home a smart ‘me-made’ floor cushion.If you are considering buying a machine or have recently purchased one, new or second-hand; have an old machine languishing in the cupboard; or just want to learn a useful new skill — then this is the class for you!In this five-hour workshop you will learn to:
- Set up your sewing machine and prepare the threads ready to start sewing
- Stitch straight lines and adjust stitch types for various uses
- Accurately sew and finish seams and zips
- Make a fully lined and filled floor cushion using SOSU's circular system of shredded scraps!

Knowledge required
Beginners: Some sewing knowledge is helpful but not required. Open to adults and young adults (minimum age 14 years). Men and non-binary folks are encouraged to attend!
What to bring
Sturdy, non-stretch, medium to heavyweight fabric for your floor cushion. 2m, please, and a 50cm dress zipper to match. We will have some options at the sewing school for you to use if you find fabric shopping daunting and/or run out of time. You're welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you have one!

All ages, genders and abilities welcome!At SOSU, we believe that sewing is a wonderful life skill, and we want to share it with you. Learning how to alter and mend the things that you have as well as learning the skills to create your own gorgeous garments will help you to be more creative and sustainable. We offer a wide range of full and half-day workshops or ongoing courses that will build, refresh or consolidate your sewing skills. We have a great mix of beginner and skilled sewists of all ages learning at our school.We can also arrange private lessons for those that learn better one-on-one. When it’s just you and your teacher you can really tackle that special project with confidence.Our back story: The School of Sewing & Upcycling was established in 2015. Set up in a small shop in Buckley Street, Footscray, where Gaye (the original owner) and her team shared their love of sewing with aspiring and experienced sewists alike.In February 2023, Zoë took over the business from Gaye (who still teaches) and in May 2023 SOSU moved into their current home in Whitehall Street, Footscray.Zoë and her team of friendly and skilled teachers look forward to welcoming you (or your ClassBento gift recipients) into their space to unlock creativity, develop sustainable habits, and master skills that will last a lifetime!
