Introduction to Improv Hand Stitching Workshop

Create, connect and calm your mind through the art of slow stitching!

3 hours Class size 1 on 1

  $110 - $290 ($110 for Public class; $290 for 1-on-1 private class) (Afterpay available)

Join our improv stitching workshop in Melbourne and learn the mindful benefits of slow stitching!
As simple as cloth, thread and a needle, this is all it takes to:
  • Create - stimulate your mind by cultivating your new art practice or expand on your existing practice. We will play with colour, shape and texture.
  • Connect - make new connections with like-minded people and re-connect with your hands.
  • Calm - untangle your thoughts with the meditative practice of hand stitching.
Without rules or rulers, we will use remnant cloth fabric strips to learn quilting techniques including hand piecing/sewing, pressing and trimming to create a freely designed quilt square/block based on the traditional Log Cabin block.
We will then explore fundamental hand embroidery techniques to mindfully add to your patchwork creation and touch on topics such as up-cycling, darning and more.
This experiential workshop is based at my studio at River Studios in West Melbourne. You will have the opportunity to connect with your creativity, relax your mind and immerse yourself in the therapeutic act of hand stitching.
By the end of the session, you will leave with new simple slow stitching techniques to continue your own practice and a hand-stitched and embroidered creation to cherish.

I was looking for a way to kick start my stitching mojo again and this was perfect. Loved Phong’s stories and gentle approach, fab little studio. Left feeling very inspired and happy, and learnt a lot. Thanks Phong!

  • 5/5 from Kelsey Murley, attended Jul 2024: This class was so enjoyable and valuable and your knowledge, designs and materials are incredible. I cannot rate this class highly enough. Opening your house to us was so inspiring. I hope there are a lot more classes to come. I am so happy after that class I want to do so much more even though I already have so many other projects on the go. I am starting my next stitching project today. My piece from the class is going to be stitched to this cushion (photo included) that I have never liked too much but this just lifts it and I will keep the cushion now. Kelsey
  • 5/5 from Bronwyn James, attended Jul 2024: I had such a lovely time in Phong’s class, experimenting with different fabrics, organic patchwork techniques, and decorative stitches. It was a beautiful environment with lots of inspiration and time to learn from Phong and his extensive experience. Would love to do another class.
  • 5/5 from Sandra Scurria, attended Jul 2024: Studio PCL hand stitching workshop was a deeply immersive experience, engaging both visual and tactile senses. The materials provided were abundant and lovely. I felt the environment fostered a truly enjoyable and creative process, with the bonus of taking a beautiful creation home.
  • 5/5 from Wendy Murley, attended Jul 2024: The time spent with Phong in this class is one of the most enjoyable encouraging hours one could spend. It does not matter if you are an absolute beginner as the time patience and instruction is excellent. If you are a seasoned embroiderer like myself the freedom the inspiration and possibilities opens up to to you are refreshing. I would encourage anyone contemplating whether to take a class with Phong to not think twice, Just go you will love it.

Hello! My name is Phong, I am an award winning Naarm/Melbourne-based designer/maker/textile artist specialising in contemporary quilts and soft sculptures through improv patchwork and hand embroidery.
Previously a shoe designer/maker, I took the opportunity to work in textile-based social enterprises in Asia, reinforcing my artisan ethos of the slow and thoughtful hand-work process and its connection to society and the environment. Taking inspiration from these experiences, I developed my textile practice upon returning to Australia in 2018.
Using up-cycled/dead-stock fabrics and natural dyes, I prioritise social and environmental care in my practice. I take a considered and intuitive approach, responding to materials and my surroundings. Applying the traditional techniques of hand-quilting, embroidery, assemblage and patchwork, I work with an overtly free hand approach to build compositional complexity.
My work has been exhibited at The Wangaratta Art Gallery, SchoolHouse Studios Gallery, Linden New Art Gallery, The Australian Tapestry Workshop, FortyFiveDownstairs Gallery, MARS Gallery, Spring 1883 Art Fair and internationally at QuiltCon (USA) and Ai No Yakata Indigo Museum (Japan).
I have collaborated with The Social Studio, The Melbourne Modern Quilt Guild, The Australian Tapestry Workshop, Melbourne Fashion Festival, Design Fringe, Woodleigh School Arts Festival, Melbourne University Student union, Better Life Network and various local councils to facilitate improv hand quilting/stitching and natural dyeing workshops. I have also facilitated workshops overseas in Nepal and Vietnam. I have been Artist in Residence at The Australian Tapestry Workshop (2024), The Braybrook Community-Engaged Artist in Residence (2025) supported by the Maribyrnong City Council and Firbank Grammar School (2026).
I enjoy teaching, sharing knowledge and breaking down barriers that may be associated with handwork and textiles. There is no right way, I encourage you to find your own way.
