Looking for unique things to do in Melbourne? Join this introduction to glassblowing at Studio Dokola in West Footscray.
In this hands-on class, you'll learn to shape molten glass into pieces you can proudly take home. Discover the magic of transforming glass into intricate shapes and designs, guided step by step by your teacher on how to work safely with the materials and tools.
You'll make both a solid glass sculpture and a blown glass vessel — a cup, bowl, vase or similar — and we'll take photos and videos of you working so you have something to show for it beyond the glass itself.
By the end of the session you'll have gained real glassblowing skills and several one-of-a-kind pieces to keep.
Good to know
  • Hot glass has to cool gradually in a kiln overnight to stop it from cracking, so your pieces will usually be ready to collect the day after your class. We can arrange a different pick-up time, or ship them to you for a small extra charge.
  • You'll leave with a follow-up voucher towards further development classes.
What you'll get
  • A small solid glass sculpture — a paperweight
  • A blown glass vessel — a cup, bowl, vase or similar
  • Use of all glassblowing PPE, including safety glasses and protective sleeves
  • Photos and videos of you working, so you can show off to friends, family and colleagues
  • A follow-up voucher towards further development classes

FAQ

Can people come and watch?
Generally, yes if you make an appointment.
Can people add materials to the glass, such as sand or pet ashes?
This is not suitable for standard weekend classes, but it may be accommodated with a private weekday booking. Sand is generally compatible but cannot be tested in advance, so results cannot be guaranteed. It works better in solid pieces such as paperweights than in blown pieces.
Is the class safe for pregnant people?
We advise that you clear this with your GP/Midwife/Health practitioner. Most of the class process is done while sitting, and there is no heavy lifting. Blowing places pressure on the cheeks, not the diaphragm, much like inflating a balloon. There is a slight temperature increase in the studio compared to outside.
See more FAQs
Will a class run in extreme heat?
Classes will be cancelled if the indoor studio temperature exceeds 38 degrees. On a summer's day with an outside temperature forecast of 40 degrees, it generally won't reach that temperature in the studio until 3pm, so class runs until 12:30pm. We will notify attendees if this is likely 48 hours before their class.
Can children attend?
Please contact us beforehand, as we need to check whether they can follow instructions safely. If a regular class isn't suitable for those under 12, alternative classes may be arranged.
Is there parking available?
Untimed parking can be found on the streets around the studio.
Can support workers attend?
Interpreters, support workers and companions are welcome to accompany attendees free of charge in a support capacity but not as a participant. If they would like to participate, they will need to book a spot.
Is the class accessible?
The Workshop space and equipment can be rearranged to accommodate most access needs. Just get in touch before booking so we can discuss your requirements and confirm whether a private session or a regular group class is the best fit. The main entrance has a couple of steps, but there is also a step-free option, and the rest of the studio and toilets are on the ground floor. Toilets are not currently fitted with wheelchair-accessible facilities. Please contact us in advance if you need to check suitability. Glass-blowing involves an open flame, a hot furnace, some noise from equipment, and the studio can get warm. Most of the process can be done seated, and seating is also available nearby for anyone who needs to rest while staying involved.

Hi! I'm a Melbourne glassblower operating a purpose-built studio in West Footscray, as well as a glass tableware and lighting company called Studio Dokola.
As glassblowing educator, I've racked up 10 years of experience guiding new and experienced students through a carefully constructed curriculum, both here in Australia and across Central Europe.
Akin to sculpting hot honey, glassblowing is guaranteed to satisfy your curiosity! I remember the intense excitement I experienced as a newcomer to the medium and love connecting with students who approach the craft with their own perspective and style.
Billy Crellin and Studio Dokola feature on Broadsheet, Craft, National Science Week and artisanal design websites around the country.
