Step into a real studio photography session and discover the art of portrait lighting! In this hands-on masterclass, you’ll learn how to use studio strobes, light your subject effectively, and explore popular portrait lighting techniques to create a variety of moods, styles and looks.
This workshop combines live demonstrations, practical guidance and hands-on practice for those who would like to choose the practical exercise add on. This is a great opportunity for you to put the newly learned knowledge to the test while it's still fresh, with expert guidance every step of the way.
What You’ll Learn
* Butterfly / Hollywood Lighting – Create classic, glamorous portraits.
* Split Lighting – Achieve dramatic portraits with striking contrast.
* Rembrandt Lighting – Master this timeless, painterly lighting style.
* Loop Lighting – Create flattering portraits with soft, natural-looking shadows.
* Short Lighting vs. Broad Lighting – Understand how lighting direction affects facial shape and dimension.
* Guiding Your Model – Learn how to direct and pose your subject with confidence.
* Light Placement & Positioning – Understand how angles, distance and placement influence the final image.
* Camera Settings for Portraiture – Learn how to dial in your manual settings for studio photography.
* Portrait Editing – Learn the fundamentals of colour correction, skin retouching, background cleanup and creating a polished, stylised final image.
Practical Exercise Add On:
* Hands-On Practice – Put your new skills into action by photographing and practising on one another using a single key light set up.
* Portrait Editing – follow along and edit your own images taken on the day. You can do this on your laptop or phone using apps like Lightroom or Snapseed.
What to Bring
* An SD card (only needed If you’d like to use one of our cameras). We’ll have three cameras available, along with three dedicated strobe lighting stations).
* Your own camera or phone (optional): Two additional portrait stations will feature continuous video lighting, allowing you to practise using your own camera or simply capture portraits on your phone.
* A laptop (optional): Bring a laptop if you’d like to edit a portrait taken during your paired photography session. This part of the practical session is optional. I will be editing a photo live, so you are welcome to simply observe. However, the learning exercise is valuable if you would like to edit along with a photo taken on your own device.
Workshop Duration
Allow approximately 1 hour and 20 mins for the demonstration workshop and a total of 3 hours if you are staying for the practical exercise and editing. Please note that we may run overtime to ensure everyone has the opportunity to practise the techniques and get the most out of the session.
Whether you’re completely new to studio lighting or looking to build on your existing photography skills, this masterclass will give you the knowledge and practical experience to create beautiful, professional-looking portraits with confidence.

Hello there, I'm Rosie.
I have been teaching cake decorating since 2014 (in person, group settings and online) and have worked in bakeries and in cake decorating supply stores during this wonderful cake decorating journey. Aside from cake decorating, I LOVE making cake decorating videos and have created cake content for the likes of Ferrero Rocher, Sony Pictures Australia and other globally renowned brands.
I love empowering people with the skills they need to build confidence in their own cake decorating abilities - often times you'll find that this confidence bleeds into other areas of your life and empowers you in more ways than you would expect. I can't wait for you to hone in on your caking skills and start something incredible! Whether it be a small business, a new therapy worthy hobby or to simply cater to your children's unique imagination on their birthdays.
