Glassblowing Workshop: The Ultimate Introduction to Hot Glass

Make a paperweight, bauble and tumbler!

6 hours

Class size 1 to 3 (public classes), 3 to 6
$550 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

Would you like to try glass blowing? This small-group workshop offers a hands-on introduction to working with molten glass, giving you the chance to create a paperweight, a bauble, and a tumbler in one session.
Over six hours (including a lunch break), you’ll be guided through the fundamentals of the process, including safety, tools, working at the bench, and gathering molten glass from the furnace. Step by step, you’ll learn how to shape and control the material, add colour, and explore techniques unique to each type of object.
You’ll create three pieces, each highlighting different skills: a solid paperweight, a decorative bauble, and a functional tumbler. This variety gives you the chance to experience both solid and blown forms and to experiment with different colours and simple decorative techniques on each piece.
Classes are limited to three participants, allowing plenty of time on the tools and individual guidance throughout. No prior experience is needed - this workshop is designed to be accessible, enjoyable, and supportive for beginners.
Your pieces will be carefully annealed in a kiln overnight and then shipped to you within the following week.
Held in a purpose-built studio in Coburg North, this workshop is a rare opportunity to explore the excitement, beauty, and thrill of shaping molten glass in a calm and focused environment.

Hi! I’m Mars of Mariella McKinley Glass.
I’ve been working with glass for over 20 years as a glass blower and cold worker, and I still love it - the material itself, and the techniques used to shape it. I create both functional glassware and sculptural, decorative pieces.
I trained in glass at Monash University in Melbourne and the Jam Factory in Adelaide, and have since worked with leading glass artists in Australia and overseas, including time at renowned studios such as Pilchuck and the Corning Museum of Glass in the USA.
I work out of the purpose-built Handmade Glass Studio in Coburg North, where I run both a hot shop and cold shop. My classes are designed to be welcoming, hands-on, and accessible for complete beginners. It’s a beautiful, supportive space, and I look forward to sharing my knowledge and love of glass blowing with you.
