Wheel Throwing Workshop

Learn how to throw clay on the pottery wheel

2 hours Class size 2 to 5 guests

  $149 (Afterpay available)

Want to see if wheel-throwing pottery is for you? Or do you want to take your pottery skills to the next level and explore new shapes, sizes, textures, and forms on the wheel?
Then look no further! Join One-off Pottery Studio (OoPs) and learn how to 'throw' clay on the pottery wheel in a small intimate studio.
A unique feature of our classes compared to other pottery studios is that we have a maximum of five people per class. So you will get highly personal attention and can guarantee that you will make at least two to four pots to keep. Most other pottery studios have 8 to 12 students per class, which means you learn far less in a one-off session! We don’t require a minimum number per class either, so you might be lucky and be the only student and have as good as a private lesson!
In each class, your friendly teacher will take you step-by-step through the process so you can create your own special wheel-thrown vessel. Wheel-throwing is harder than it looks, so keep your expectations realistic if you are a beginner. It does not matter. You will love what you throw, regardless. It's more about the process than the outcome.
Please note:
  • Clay, glazes, firing of up to four pots, and a beverage are included in the price.
  • Please book at least 24 hours in advance.

  • 5/5 from Steph Cook, attended Nov 2025: I signed up for this class on very short notice because there happened to be a session on the next day. Jacqui was a really good teacher, the location was only a short walk from a train station, and I really liked the very small class size and the opportunity to have input into glaze colours. I have taken several taster/one-off sessions, and most other studios have much bigger classess and you either get a clear glaze or everyone votes on one colour. Recommend!
  • 5/5 from Jessica Flynn, attended Oct 2025: Jackie was very friendly and had such a fun experience with my mum. Neither of us had any experience and found it very enjoyable. Great idea for birthday or Mother’s Day gift!
  • 5/5 from Ishwar Ramkumar, attended May 2025: Jacqui explained everything so well and was amazing. Would definitely do it again.
  • 5/5 from Jacqui Ray, attended May 2025: My instructor Jacqui was amazing! She is very knowledgeable, patient and runs through the steps with precision. I definitely recommend her class and as a beginner I came out of it with quite a few pieces of work.

  • 5/5 from Natalia Arriola, attended Feb 2025: Jacqui was such a fantastic teacher. She took us through the basics to get started and offered a lot of help and support, especially to those who it was their first time. Jacqui was extremely accommodating and hospitable. Her studio was the perfect setting for an intimate catch up with friends. I would highly recommend doing one of her workshops.
  • 5/5 from Divya Jain, attended Jul 2024: I booked pottery session at Oops on the occasion of my partner’s birthday and it turned out to be the best gift to him. My partner was truly thrilled and enjoyed the session. Jacqui was incredibly patient in giving us some wonderful and in-depth lessons on pottery. She even offered us wine and crips. For beginners like us Jacqui helped us in making 3-4 very cute pieces. Overall it was a a great value for money and the experience will stay with us as a beautiful birthday memory.
  • 5/5 from Stella Lee, attended Jun 2023: Very friendly private class. 100% recommend for the beginners as you’ll have closer tutorials one by one. We had such an amazing experience today

My name is Jacqui, and I discovered pottery about eight years ago when I signed up for a pottery course at the local community centre. I was hooked from the get-go. In fact, I became so passionate about it, that I have since completed numerous courses in hand-building, wheel-throwing, glazing and firing in Australia, Denmark and Italy.
I started OoPs (One-off Pottery Studio) in 2019 and have since sold hundreds of pieces at several markets like the Rose Street Market, Mansfield Pottery Festival, the Brighton Soul Night Market, Le Studio Ceramics market, and Mooroduc Station Market.
I have also exhibited numerous pieces at the Dinner Plain Art Fair, Beaumaris Art Group, the Gulgong Clay Festival, the Sol Gallery in Fitzroy and the Memo Gallery in Healesville. I currently have numerous pieces exhibiting at Eagles Nest Galley in Aireys Inlet and my "Oceans, Interrupted" Exhbition at The Window, Bayside in Sandringham.
In 2022, I ran the ceramic studio at Le Studio Art Space in Mordialloc. There I discovered my love of teaching wheel-throwing and hand-building in collaboration with other wonderful ceramic teachers. I set up my own studio in Hampton in 2024, where I teach today. I also teach at the Beaumaris Art Group and the Brighton Recreation Centre.
What do I love about pottery? Mostly how I become completely absorbed in watching a piece of mud transform into a vessel and can shut out the world for a few hours. I love the unpredictable nature of pottery - each time I open the kiln, it's like a new exciting episode of a sitcom. The alchemy of earth, water, fire and chemicals leads to a myriad possibilities. Not-to-mention that pottery is mesmerising to watch and do. And fun. And very messy.
