Street art is bold, fast, and all about making your mark. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to design, cut, and paint your own stencils; the foundation of some of the most iconic street art styles.

Guided by a practising street artist, Jess Kease (aka 23rd Key), you’ll start with the design process: how to take a photo or image and digitise it into a stencil using image editing software, in this case, Photoshop. From there, you’ll learn how to print, cut, and prepare your stencil, with tips on keeping your lines clean and your design sharp. Finally, you’ll explore how to paint with your stencil, using printout examples provided to get you started.

By the end, you’ll walk away with your own hand-cut stencil and the know-how to create striking designs you can use again and again.

Please note: This class requires at least 8 students to run. In the unlikely event that we don't get this number of students, we'll cancel the class and fully refund you and inform you via email, so please watch your email a few days prior to the class.

Jess Kease

Jess (aka 23rd Key) is a Melbourne-based stencil and mural artist who began creating in 2005 and first exhibited in 2008. Known for her meticulous hand-cut stencils and photo-realistic imagery, she combines influences from her background in printmaking, graphic design, audio engineering, and architecture. Over time, her practice has expanded into freehand painting and large-scale murals.

Her dedication to detail has earned her major recognition, including the Australian Stencil Art Prize (2011), the World Stencil Art Prize (2014), and the Emerging Artist Award at Forty-Five Downstairs (2017). She has exhibited widely with solo shows such as Skills to Pay the Bills (2011), Keezus (2014), Keezus: The Second Coming (2017), and Forever Home (2019), each exploring themes of ego, the human condition, culture, and place.

Breaking new ground in the medium, Jess is one of few stencil artists to integrate 3D, freehand, and mural-scale works. Her distinct style, technical precision, and versatility make her work instantly recognisable.
