Cyanotype Workshop for Beginners

Learn how to make sun printing magic at this Canberra workshop!

2 hours 15 mins

Class size 1 to 8 (public classes), 6 to 12
  $85 (Afterpay available)

Looking for unique things to do in Canberra? Join artist Julie Ryder in an introduction to the cyanotype process - a fun way of creating photographs without a camera!
Commencing with a brief history of the technique and the woman who pioneered it, we will then use a variety of natural and man-made materials to create unique blueprints inspired by our natural environment, using the sun as our light source.
This express two-hour class gives you the opportunity to try the photogram technique using pressed leaves, flowers, seaweeds, grasses and seeds as well as exploring photo negatives. These prints are revealed by the sun to produce classic blue and white images.
You will experiment with this hands-on method using two to three paper prints before working on your DIY fabric project in an embroidery hoop to frame and display proudly in your home!
Please note that a minimum of 5 people are required to run this workshop. In the event that number is not reached 2 days prior to the workshop it will be cancelled.

We used a variety of materials and different types of paper to create exciting blue and white artworks inspired by nature, using the sun as our light source. Julie explained the process really well and also talked about English botanist and photographer Anna Atkins (1799-1871) who pioneered this technique! I highly recommend this class as an introduction and next time I would book a longer one. Check out Julie’s website too: she’s a magnificent artist with a beautiful body of work.
  • 4/5 from Julie Hamilton, attended Mar 2024: Julie is a very knowledgeable and welcoming teacher. Her studio is a lovely, inspiring space for the workshop and there was plenty of room for the small group of 7. She had everything set up including an artificial light source to combat the overcast day. We did 4 cyanotypes each, with helpful tips and guidance from Julie as we went. People who like to learn by doing will appreciate the chance to experiment with different paper types. The class was a good introduction to the simple but amazing art of cyanotype printing. Would definitely recommend this workshop.
