Join Gerard Mignot in this beginner-friendly class and learn how to paint a portrait with acrylic!
Guided by Gerard, you will learn the expressive portrait technique, which uses only a few fast and loose brushstrokes to capture the likeness of a person. It refers to a style of painting in which the artist aims to represent a way of feeling or seeing.
This workshop will help you to understand the structure of a face in term of shapes, planes change, and value by using lines and value rendering.
By the end of the class, you will take home your portrait, as well as feeling confident in this new, creative hobby!
After working as an illustrator for a greeting card company in South Australia, Gerard studied graphic design and pre-press printing. He then honed his skills in various design studios and printing enterprises. He specializes in portraiture and figurative art in both digital and traditional media. He also has an extensive hospitality in French culinary institute.

The class I attended was combined with a sketching class which meant our teacher spent half of his time assisting others with a different art form. We didn’t have consistent guidance and were left to work most of it out ourselves. He did help from time to time but there was no real structure to the class. I envisaged someone guiding us step by step and explaining how each element and step of the process should be done. I was also a little disappointed to find out that the teacher wanted us to paint one of his pictures rather than the picture we were asked to bring along. Overall, the experience was a bit overwhelming because of the lack of structure.

Hi Lana
I am sorry that you were disappointed by the class but the pictures that you brought were not good to get the most of the workshop.
If you had a selection of better pictures we might had a chance to get more out of it. It all depends on your ability to handle colours.
As for the portrait that I gave you it was probably not for your level however it gave you an inside on how colours works. There was also a picture on how to get started which should have been self explanatory as for the colour mixing I actually gave you guidance and mixed the colours so it was more easy for you to progress,
I am prepare to give a private tutorial at no cost to you, except that you bring your own brushes, paints and canvas so you can paint your own pet portrait. We appreciate your honest feedback and will take it into consideration for future improvements.
I thought the class was good value for money and the location was great even though there were renovations going on outside the shop

I thoroughly enjoyed this class. Gerard was very patient and gave expert guidance to me, never having done this before. Im sure it would be even more beneficial to a better level of artist. Definitely worthwhile!
