Folk Art: Stories in Paint

3 hours

Class size 1 to 16 (public classes), 12 to 40
$85 (PayPal Pay in 4 available)

Discover the simple, expressive language of folk art and create your own small painted story.

Folk art has a wonderfully distinctive visual language: bold shapes, simplified imagery, decorative patterns, limited colour palettes and, often, a story hiding beneath the surface.

In this relaxed, beginner-friendly painting workshop, we’ll explore what makes folk art folk art before putting those ideas into practice on your own A4 canvas.

We’ll look at examples of folk art from different traditions and break down some of its key characteristics: from reducing complex subjects into simple shapes and symbols, to using repetition, pattern and colour to create a strong decorative style.

You’ll then develop your own folk-art visual vocabulary, experimenting with simple motifs such as flowers, animals, plants, people, houses and symbolic objects.

From there, you’ll choose a simple story, memory, place, creature or idea to inspire your painting. You’ll create a quick composition before translating your story into a finished acrylic painting using a deliberately limited colour palette.

You’ll finish the session with your own A4 folk-art painting, created entirely from your own story and visual ideas.

No previous painting experience is required; this workshop is about discovering your own visual language, not painting perfectly.

All materials are provided, including acrylic paints and an A4 canvas.

Come with an open mind, a willingness to experiment, and perhaps a little story you’d like to tell.

Please note: This class requires at least 5 students to run. In the unlikely event that we don't get this number of students, we'll cancel the class, fully refund you, and inform you via email, so please watch your email a few days prior to the class.

Liana Kappelle

Liana Kappelle

Liana Kappelle is a multidisciplinary artist, maker and workshop facilitator whose practice is driven by curiosity, storytelling and a healthy dose of the weird and wonderful. Working across painting, illustration, textiles, sculpture, paper arts and mixed media, Liana loves exploring the space between art, craft and ritual.

A lifelong lover of folklore, esoteric traditions and tarot, Liana often brings these threads into her creative practice, exploring tarot as both a tool for storytelling and a rich visual language of archetypes, symbols and human experience.

As a facilitator, Liana is passionate about making creativity feel accessible, playful and genuinely enjoyable. Her workshops are less about getting things “right” and more about experimenting, getting your hands dirty and discovering what happens when you give yourself permission to make something imperfect.

With a background in psychology and classical studies alongside years of teaching and facilitating creative workshops, Liana brings a thoughtful, encouraging approach to the studio. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a lifelong maker, she believes everyone has a creative practice waiting to be poked, prodded and let loose.
