South Australian gardens are full of potent botanicals — Mediterranean herbs, native plants, citrus and pomegranate trees, lavender, rosemary, and calendula — that have been used for centuries to care for the skin. Most gardeners walk past them every day without knowing what they hold.
This hands-on workshop brings together the botanical world of the SA garden and the ancient art of natural skincare formulation. Guided by Zhanna Petku — founder of Fragrant Rituals, natural perfumer, and slow apothecary — participants will learn to identify the skin-nourishing properties of plants they already grow and craft their own natural skincare collection from them.
Participants will make 3 to 4 products to take home, including preparations made from locally grown and foraged botanicals. The workshop will also introduce the basics of hydrolat making and botanical infusions — simple techniques that can be continued at home, from the garden, season after season.
Drawing on Mediterranean herbal traditions, Eastern European folk remedies, Western herbalism, and the native plant knowledge of the South Australian landscape, this workshop offers a genuinely cross-cultural, deeply rooted experience of what it means to live in relationship with the plants around us.

I didn't start Fragrant Rituals because I wanted a business. I started it because my body wouldn't tolerate the synthetic world anymore.
For as long as I can remember, walking down the perfume aisle gave me headaches. Commercial skincare caused sensitivity. I knew there had to be another way — so I went looking for it.
I studied aromatherapy and organic skincare formulation, learning to separate marketing noise from what actually works and what is genuinely safe. Then came the thing that changed everything — natural perfumery. Training in Europe introduced me to the ancient art of composing scent from pure botanicals — flowers, resins, herbs, bark and spices — the same materials humans have used for thousands of years to heal, connect and ritualise.
That knowledge didn't just change what I put on my skin. It changed how I understood myself and my place in the natural world.
Years of learning, formulating and testing eventually became Fragrant Rituals — my South Australian artisan perfumery and slow apothecary. Every formula I make is handcrafted in small batches, blended in the traditional French perfumery style, using only ingredients I trust completely.
I love teaching because this knowledge changed my life and I want it to change yours too. Most people have never been told what is actually in their mainstream perfume, or that natural alternatives can be just as complex, just as beautiful — and so much kinder to your body and the earth. Watching someone compose their first botanical perfume and realise they've created something entirely their own — that moment never gets old.
To date, I have welcomed over 400 students into my workshops across South Australia. My workshops have been featured in Glam Adelaide and Weekend Notes, listed on South Australia Tourism, and reviewed on Tripadvisor — here is what some of my students have said:
*"Zhanna is a very informed and professional instructor and made learning about the history of perfume and perfume making fun. The tea break with chocolates and Zhanna's herbal teas was a delightful highlight."*
*"The class exceeded our expectations. Zhanna was so knowledgeable and lovely. Fantastic teacher. I would recommend this workshop to everyone."*
*"This class was absolutely a fantastic way to spend an afternoon. Worth every penny of the ticket price."*
What most people don't know about natural perfumery is how deeply human it is. For thousands of years, before synthetics existed, botanical fragrance was simply how people lived — it was medicine, ritual, and identity all at once. When I teach, I'm not just showing you how to make perfume. I'm connecting you to something ancient and returning you to your original nature — the shared thread between people, plants, and place.
