Honey and Hive: Open a Hive, Honey Tasting with Morning Tea Experience Southern Highlands

Learn about bees, open a hive (wearing a bee suit!) and taste delicious honey at this unique Bowral experience!

2 hours

Experience size 1 to 10 (public dates), 8 to 40
  $138 (Afterpay available)

Bees are one of the marvels of nature and have been studied, observed and mythologised since Egyptian times.
In this unique experience, you'll join a passionate beekeeper amongst his hives, suited up and surrounded by bees. We start the experience on our beautiful terrace with a honey tasting of up to 6 different honeys. The taste, texture, viscosity, colour and aromas are linked directly to the floral sources available to the bees who make this liquid gold from the bush and gardens around the honey farm.
Over morning tea consisting of plunger tea and coffee with fresh sourdough to complement the honey tasting, you'll hear about the fascinating lifecycle of this remarkable pollinator and the important part bees play in our food cycle before then suiting up in a professional full-length beekeeper's suit (+ gloves!) and moving to the hives. You'll see inside a hive, hold a frame of bees and see their remarkable lives up close.
You'll be shown the different styles of hive (including the Flow Hive) and be guided through the process of an inspection, checking the laying pattern of the queen and checking for honey and health. If we’re lucky, we’ll find "Liz", the queen of the colony!
This is a great general introduction to bees and their amazing lives; however, if you're interested in setting up your own hive, we run longer, in-depth workshops. Drop us a line or check out the other listings.
What you'll get
  • The workshop includes a morning tea of freshly baked sourdough, leaf tea and plunger coffee.
  • Open a hive and learn about the lifecycle of bees from an expert.
Knowledge required
Beginner-friendly. No knowledge of beekeeping is required.
What to bring
You will need covered shoes and long socks. Ideally, ankle-covering boots.
Location

Bowral Honey Farm - 1325 Old S Rd, Bowral NSW

We're on the grounds of Retford Park, a National Trust property. Enter through the main gates 1525 Old South Road, Bowral. Drive straight ahead (it's a long driveway, very fancy!) the drive eventually turns off to the right. You'll see my hives and signage set up. You can park in the paddock opposite, or go ahead a little further and park in the gravel parking area. I'd suggest that you arrive 15x minutes early so you're not rushed. We will also have honey available for sale after the visit. This tour takes place on the grounds of Retford Park, NOT our former site in Bowral township. It is a 5x minute drive from Bowral main street.
