Japanese Mizuhiki Knot Craft Workshop: Earrings and Bookmark

Learn mizuhiki, the Japanese art of decorative cord knotting. Make a pair of earrings and a bookmark to take home!

2.5 hours Location Goodwood Class size 1 to 6 (public classes), 5 to 8   $85 - $95 (Earlybird price of $85 applies if you book into a public session 15+ days ahead) (Afterpay available)

In Japan, these mizuhiki knots have marked envelopes, gifts, and ceremonies for centuries. Each knot carries meaning: the awaji musubi, the plum blossom, the tightening bond.
In this two hour workshop, you will learn to work the cord with your hands. We begin with the foundation knot, then move to the round plum blossom form that sits at the centre of most mizuhiki work. You will make two pieces to take home: a pair of earrings and a mizuhiki bookmark in colours of your choosing.
No experience is needed. The cord is forgiving. What matters is patience with your fingers and a little time.
The workshop runs in our studio space at Yugen, a Japanese-inspired café in Hyde Park, Goodwood. Our full menu of specialty coffee, Japanese tea, and matcha, as well as pastries and desserts, are available to purchase before and after class.

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 5 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we may cancel the session; if that happens, we'll inform you and let you choose between a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

  • 5/5 from Sharon Stevens, attended Oct 2026: Mizuhiki earrings and bookmark class. My birthday present from my sister-in-law, Jill. Teacher was very good and gave everyone equal time and help with our projects. Very relaxing and fun class. The cafe setting was really nice and staff very friendly.
  • 5/5 from Beatrice Duong, attended Oct 2026: I really enjoyed this class - took my mum who was visiting from Melbourne and we had a lovely time together making earrings and charms. The class was a mix of ages and there was about six of us in total, so plenty of time for everyone to get one on one attention from the instructor. I’m not the best with hand eye coordination but it was a very relaxing/low key environment and the instructor was really patient and helpful when I got confused. The class was also held in Yugen Art and Coffee, which has a great ambience and excellent ube matchas! Thanks for a great workshop :)

My name is Ayana.

I’m originally from Japan and worked as a flight attendant before moving to Australia. Since making Adelaide my home, I’ve become passionate about sharing the beauty of Japanese culture with others.
Through mizuhiki, the traditional Japanese art of decorative knot-tying, I love showing how simple cords can be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful. I hope my classes give you a chance to relax, be creative, and enjoy a little piece of Japan.

Eda Tevrizci is a professional Ebru artist living in Australia since 2016. She started to work on traditional Ebru art early in 2015 which stole her heart immediately and has been practising it since then.
This art form has been added to UNESCO's world cultural heritage list in 2014; she uses water surface as a canvas and then transfers the created patterns onto paper, fabric or other materials.
Using natural pigments, traditional materials and water surface as a canvas, she tries to find a balance and connection between the traditional and modern designs through her works but she is more after in creating contemporary, abstract forms rooted in the traditional art form.
After living and running workshops in Melbourne for five years, she now conducts ebru workshops and short-term courses in Adelaide for art lovers who are open to a unique experience — paint on water surface.
Apart from workshops, she also creates tangible ebru designed jewellery and fashion accessories, stationery and home decoration products all of which reflect her vision of life.
For Eda, Ebru is a lifelong learning journey and she is keen to share her expertise with people while trying to achieve more each and every day. She loves the freedom and endless possibilities that Ebru offers and always looks for new and creative ways to adapt it to the new forms of today’s world.
