Julie Ryder is a Canberra-based textile designer who has gained national and international recognition for her work. She is a practising textile artist, designer and educator. Originally trained in science, Julie retrained as a textile designer at Melbourne Institute of Textiles and started her own design studio focussing on designing and hand-printing fabrics for home-wares, fashion and interiors. She complete a Master of Arts (Visual Arts - Textiles) at ANU in 2004.

Her hybrid practice combines her knowledge of science with her love of textiles, and she uses nature as both a muse and a co-collaborator. Natural materials are used for dyes and as materials for paper-based artworks.

Arts residencies at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, CSIRO, the National Museum of Australia, Rimbun Dahan, Hill End, Bundanon, Ireland, Iceland and Canada have all inspired continued research and produced significant bodies of work.

My friend and I joined Canberra artist Julie Ryder for a fun cyanotype workshop today. We used a variety of materials and different types of paper to create exciting blue and white artworks inspired by nature, using the sun as our light source. Julie explained the process really well and also talked about English botanist and photographer Anna Atkins (1799-1871) who pioneered this technique!

I highly recommend this class as an introduction and next time I would book a longer one.
Check out Julie’s website too: she’s a magnificent artist with a beautiful body of work.

This was a fabulous beginner course. It was really well structured, so that we were all able to walk away with two paper and one textile print. I learnt a great deal and feel confident in trying this process at home. Julie was a very organised and insightful teacher.

I had the best fun. I can see how easily dying can become addictive. I'd love to learn more and try other techniques. Thank you, Julie.

Julie's shibori dyeing class was a fabulous afternoon. Julie explained the technical background to the process and various techniques. She showed us examples of what patterns can be aimed for and went through how to achieve the desired outcome. Provided materials were excellent and I went home very happy with my scarf after a fun afternoon.

Julie's class was a treat! Her blend of warmth, kindness and professionalism, and her gorgeous garden studio were refreshing, encouraging and inspiring. I came home with several pieces to frame and the confidence and inspiration to experiment further with cyanotype.

I really enjoyed the class. Julie is an experienced artist and teacher. She was well prepared and has a great art studio. I loved all the pieces I created. Cyanotype doesn’t work well without sunlight so the weather impacts classes.
