Letter Carving in Stone Workshop

This is a rare opportunity to participate in an intensive 4-day workshop to learn the basics of the craft of drawing and carving letters in stone. This is a skill that dates back centuries; however, we are rarely exposed to it these days. Learn to create your own everlasting memorials, capture a poem or your most meaningful words in stone. Hand-carved letters in stone have a vibrance and beauty that can't be matched. The process is enthralling, enchanting, and immersive. This is a skill that will open up a never-before-imagined universe of creative possibilities. All you need is a few chisels, a mallet, a piece of stone, and your imagination.

The workshop will consist of an introduction to the craft and how it has been practiced over the millennium and how it survives and thrives today. We will be looking at the importance of Roman capitals to the craft and how to draw them properly to maximise the impact of the carved letter.

You will design a very simple inscription and learn how to transfer this to the stone face. You will then be shown the technique for carving the design using the traditional V-cut method to produce beautiful, crisp letters that bring your design to life.

There will be two instructors to assist and guide you who will be available at all times to show you through the intricacies of the craft.

All materials, tools, and equipment required will be supplied. Glasses and dust masks will be available if desired. Your only requirement is to wear sturdy, covered shoes.

This workshop will be suitable for beginners and for people who have some experience. A little bit of research would be very handy for absolute beginners. There is plenty of information online about it, which you will find by simply searching for Letter Carving in stone.
  Attendees will get to keep any of the carvings they do during the workshop. You will also get a handout that describes the process of drawing the letters and carving the letters. You will also get access to follow-up opportunities to continue learning and practicing the craft.
  Sturdy covered shoes and something to eat and drink. Coffee and water will be available.
