Learn how to create intriguing manga characters from simple pencil sketches to more complex ink and brush-pen illustrations with Scribble Cat Studios.
In this class, you will learn how to design compelling Japanese-inspired manga characters from scratch and how to give them their unique style.
Bring your character to life by giving them a personality and creating professional character sheets. Your tutor, an experienced animation and anime lecturer, will show you how to draw the facial features of your character and how to draw the character’s head in different positions.
You will get tips in developing your own style while looking to common and traditional manga styles such as kawaii, shojo, chibi and, moe for inspiration.
Furthermore, you will explore different facial expressions and how to give your character a unique hairstyle and clothing. Finally, you can pick your favourite character concept design and finalise your illustration using ink, brush-pen, and colour.

We are focusing on traditional art making and hand drawing/non-digital drawing!
Through this physical and tactile experience, you will get a broader view how this material can be used and the physical creation will improve your hand-eye coordination as well as motor skills. Furthermore, traditional artworks are hard to copy, each handmade creation will show your personal style and will be truly unique!
Knowledge required
This beginner-friendly class is designed for all skill levels. You don’t need to have previous experience in drawing to attend this class. You will get an overview of the material and you will learn basic sketching and hand drawing techniques.
What to bring
  • You only need to bring basic material such as a sketch pad (A4) and pencils.
  • Bring a bottle of water and a snack if you like!

The class had paper, pencils and pens to use and lots of sheets to work from as well as easy to understand and character drawing and building tips from the teacher. It was interesting to do the colouring work also and experiment with the colour pens. A great entry point into manga drawing for kids at all different levels.
