This is a unique collaboration workshop, Art Kintsugi Sydney with Eriko Takefuji---Adelaide-based Urasenke Chado instructor, to bring together two essential traditional Japanese practices based on wabi-sabi (Zen philosophy).
In this full-day workshop, you will be introduced to the history of Kintsugi and Chado (Japanese tea ceremony). In the first four hours you will learn the art of Kintsugi using modern accessible materials, followed by Chado demonstration and Matcha tea tasting with Japanese sweets.
Learn about Kintsugi
Kintsugi is a century-old Japanese craft where broken ceramic objects are pieced back together using Urushi lacquer and gold dust, an art of mending based on the philosophy of Zen and Wabi-Sabi, finding beauty in impermanence, derived from Chado.
Learn about Chado
Japanese tea ceremony, the way of tea, is a spiritual and ascetic training to refine oneself and to be present to one's mind and, most importantly, to make a satisfying bowl of tea for the guests.

  • 5/5 from Paulo Ricardo P de Oliveira, attended Jul 2026: It was an amazing experience—enriching on many levels: personal, artistic, informative, and creative. The concepts of Wabi-Sabi and Kintsugi, as well as the processes of creating and repairing pottery, were explained and explored beautifully. The teaching approach allowed students to feel comfortable throughout their learning journey while providing plenty of opportunities to ask questions and clarify any doubts. I certainly enjoyed it a great deal. I absolutely loved it. If there be a second level or a longer course to attend about Kintsugi and/or Wabi-sabi I will be there!
  • 5/5 from Emma Luxardo, attended Jul 2026: Great day. Informative, relaxing, very well organised.
  • 5/5 from Karen Vivian, attended Jul 2026: A fantastic, mindful day. Very informative and interesting. Thoughtfully planned with expert guidance. Excellent, welcoming tutors. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and learnt a great deal.
  • 5/5 from Mick Francis, attended Jul 2026: This was a unique experience to learn about the philosophy and process of kintsugi. The class was meticulously planned and there were thoughtful inclusions to add to the experience. I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn more about Japanese culture, in particular, Wabi-sabi, Kintsugi and Chado (the traditional Japanese "Way of Tea").
  • 5/5 from Robyn Octoman, attended Jul 2026: I am so pleased I did the Kintsugi class! Yoko was very welcoming and very knowledgeable. A meticulously and thoughtfully planned workshop along with learning interesting history of Japanese culture, Wabi-Sabi and Kintsugi. I also enjoyed Eriko's Chado (traditional tea ceremony) dressed in her traditional kimono - it was graceful, calming and beautiful and a lovely way to end the day. I would love to do another workshop with a slightly more difficult piece to mend.
  • 5/5 from Mena Muecke, attended Nov 2025: A wonderful day spent with Yoko learning the history and art of Kintsugi. Yoko presented us with a fully equipped tray of utensils and materials to begin the repair a small broken dish. The morning was presented as stages of repair allowing us time to listen and learn through Yoko’s demonstrations and then apply to our own piece. This ancient method is a beautiful study of mindfulness and respect for all things. The highlight of the day was expressing the repair line of our piece in gold paint and then dusting it down with gold powder at the end. We were given a small box to store and protect our piece for the journey home. The final stage of cleaning the piece to be completed at home after 5 days of curing. There was not one detail that Yoko had not meticulously planned. It was a very special experience and Im thrilled to have been introduced to this new skill. I have purchased a Kintsugi kit from Yoko so I can repair and practice in my own time. Yoko’s generous invitation to email her at any time for additional advice and direction is priceless. Yoko’s knowledge and expertise in this traditional art was inspiring. It was wonderful to be learning Kintsugi with a master, I hope to join another class with Yoko in the future. Adding to an already special workshop, we also enjoyed Chado, the way of tea. It began with the fascinating history of 16th century tea making in Japan followed by a graceful demonstration by Eriko in traditional dress. Thanks Yoko for showing me the way of Kintsugi! I enjoyed the workshop immensely. Im excited to put my new found skills to work!

  • 5/5 from Linda Shmith, attended Nov 2025: Yoko provided all the resources and instructions via demonstration to complete a simple Kintsugi piece. Her instructions were clear and detailed and our results were very satisfying. Eriko gave us a history lesson via her computer screen of the Chado (cha-tea and do-way) The Way of Tea. At the end of the workshop, Eriko performed a spellbinding Tea Ceremony for each of us to experience a freshly made matcha tea. Amazing. Highly recommend this workshop.

The Chado presentation at the beginning gave a good context for Kintsugi and the workshop finished well with Chado. The workshop offered a unique opportunity. I liked the venue and the size of the class. The equipment needed for the workshop was well presented and the small snacks were appreciated as was the light lunch. I felt satisfied that I had learnt the basics of Kintsugi and will enjoy the small plate. Thank you.
