Step 1 – Form the Base Ball
Wedge (knead) a piece of clay to remove air bubbles, then roll it into a smooth ball about the size of an orange. This will become the base of your pinch mug.
Step 2 – Form a Tunnel
Hold the clay ball in one hand and use your thumb to press a hole into the centre.
Step 3 – Pinch the Walls
Gently pinch and rotate the clay with your fingers, thinning out the walls evenly to create a cup shape.
Step 4 – Add a Handle
Roll a small coil of clay and curve it into a “C” shape. Score (scratch) and slip (add clay + water mixture) to attach it securely to your mug. Blend the joins so the handle is strong and comfortable.
Step 4 – Smooth and Finish
Use your fingers, a sponge or rib tool to smooth the surface. Decorate by carving, stamping, or adding floral and foliage prints for a unique touch. Once dry, your mug will be bisque fired, glazed, and returned as a functional piece

- Kiln & glaze firing included – your 1–2 handcrafted mugs will go through both bisque and glaze firing for durability and a professional finish
- All student work glazed in a classic satin white glaze
- A fun and social creative experience in Fremantle or Subiaco
- Processing time: Please allow 6–8 weeks for glazing and firing. You’ll be notified when your pieces are ready for collection.
- Collection: Finished mugs must be picked up within 4 weeks of notification (no postage available). Items can be collected by you or a nominated friend/family member.
