Imagine this. A lift in a hotel going to the room where there will be a few hundred women at an international women's event. I board the lift. It is suffocating. It is Poison (name of perfume) on steroids. One woman says, 'it smells nice in here.' I reply, 'It must be the (one) man!' It was the 1980s and big was in; hair, shoulder pads and perfume. From that point onwards, I made my own natural perfumes to avoid overpowering synthetic ones because I love scent, especially the scents of nature, the Aussie bush, bouquets of freshly cut flowers, the surf on a summer's day, the new scents when travelling that are unique to a place, and more. I have an extensive library of natural scents, many native to Australia (e.g., sandalwood, blue cypress, rosewood, Fragonia, Kunzea, etc) including the Byron Bay region (e.g., Rosalina, lemon scented tea tree, Byron bay rose, pineapple Myrtle etc) and from all corners of the world (e.g., Nepalese tulip, Indonesian jasmine, Laotian Vetiver, Italian petitgrain, Indian rose, and so so many more).
Formally, I completed a number of Master Perfumers' courses, naturals by Karen Gilbert in the UK, and two with the powerhouse in the perfume industry, Perfumer's world. I also have knowledge of mixed media and synthetics. Formal study have given me more insights into the science of perfumery, and with regular practice, I have honed my skills in the art and craft of perfumery, especially natural perfumery. I love to share what I know and my hope is that one day I will create perfume formulation books no different to the countless cookbooks that bring joy to so many worldwide.
I run perfume and wellness balm classes in two locations, one at the farm, Rosewood Estate, in northern NSW and the other in my studio in Miami on the Gold Coast. At the farm, I also do a sensory garden walk of the abundant fragrant plants and a full distillation of plants (e.g., lemon Myrtle, lemon scented tea tree, thyme, rosemary, and many more) for essential oils and hydrosols. I completed distilling courses with master distiller, Jill Mulvaney from Alembics in New Zealand.
Furthermore, I have been a psychological counsellor and educator for more than 30 years, and a little like Mary Poppins, have reached into my magical bag to utilise my diverse resources to teach and counsel clients to gain a greater understanding of self, emotions, relationships, life and more. One of these has been the power of scent as a sensory journey to feel and behave the way you want rather than the way you do! I have extensive experience running training programs in the workplace for groups, teams and organisations, and therapy for individuals, couples and families.
