Nine Week Chinese Ink Art Course

Chinese ink art is more than painting with a brush and ink. Shaped through centuries of cultural and artistic development, it has become a distinctive visual language for observing nature, understanding form, using space, creating rhythm, and expressing artistic mood.Across nine weeks, you’ll begin with the cultural foundations of ink art, traditional materials, and essential brush-and-ink techniques. From there, you’ll explore the symbolism and artistic expression of the Four Gentlemen before moving into traditional landscapes, flowers, and birds. The series also introduces the idea of seeing within through art, giving you space to reflect on the relationship between artistic practice, observation, and inner awareness.This series runs across 9 weekly classes, held every Saturday from 11am. Each class lasts approximately 2–2.5 hours. Rather than experiencing ink art through isolated one-off workshops, you’ll build your understanding over time. As your confidence with brush and ink grows, you’ll also develop a deeper appreciation of the cultural and artistic traditions behind the practice.Course overview:Stage One: Discovering Ink Art and the Four Treasures of the Study (week 1)You’ll begin by exploring the foundations of Oriental ink art and becoming familiar with the Four Treasures of the Study. You’ll learn how the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone work together while developing the basic techniques that will support the rest of your learning journey.Stage Two: The Four Gentlemen (weeks 2- 4)You’ll explore the classical subjects of plum blossom, orchid, bamboo, and chrysanthemum. Along the way, you’ll discover their cultural symbolism, artistic character, and expressive qualities while continuing to develop control, rhythm, and confidence with the brush.Stage Three: Landscapes, Flowers, and Birds (weeks 5- 8)Your learning will then expand into traditional landscape, flower, and bird subjects. You’ll be introduced to richer ideas of composition, space, rhythm, atmosphere, and the expressive interpretation of nature. This stage gives you more room to bring technique, observation, and personal interpretation together.Stage Four: Seeing Within Through Art (week 9)The final stage brings cultural understanding, artistic practice, and personal experience together. • This is a progressive 9-week learning experience. Your booking reserves a place for the full series rather than for individual classes. As each class builds on previous learning, we encourage you to attend the full series wherever possible. We understand, however, that you may occasionally need to miss a class. To support continuity of learning, we will include an additional catch-up component, allowing participants to revisit important techniques, concepts, or learning areas they may have missed.
