We kick off with a high-energy dive into your sketchbook. Using personal photos, gallery views, or pure imagination, you’ll create a rapid series of thumbnail sketches. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s speed. By working quickly, you’ll bypass the analytical brain and silence the inner critic, discovering raw visual ideas that serve as the spark for your creative journey.

Using your chosen thumbnail as a map, we move to a stretched canvas to build a bold, tactile foundation. Working with black and white acrylics and thick modelling paste, you’ll use large colour shapers to 'sculpt' the surface. Because the tools are too large for fine detail, you are forced to work broadly and intuitively. This nearly random process keeps you out of the 'tight' analytical mindset, allowing you to access your deep creative brain through thick, expressive texture

As your work evolves, we enter an iterative, experimental phase. To push your boundaries, I introduce a cutting-edge creative partner: AI. By capturing your work-in-progress, we generate unique variations that act as a ‘visual brainstorm.’ These AI-assisted insights don't tell you what to paint—they serve as a catalyst, sparking fresh possibilities you might never have imagined. Use technology to fuel your traditional craft.

Now, we introduce color into the monochrome textures, using acrylics—and even fluorescents—to breathe life into the work. Continuing with color shapers rather than brushes, you’ll drag paint across the peaks and valleys of your textured canvas, letting the relief create unexpected patterns. This is an intuitive dialogue: you learn to listen as the painting 'talks' to you. If you feel lost at this stage, embrace it—that’s simply your analytical brain stepping aside so your silent, creative intuition can take over the work.

As the painting evolves, you’ll solve visual problems by changing perspective—stepping back, turning the canvas, and listening to the work. I will work alongside you, occasionally intervening to demonstrate techniques or 'break' areas that have become too precious. In our collaborative environment, we let go of the ego to remember: it isn’t 'your' painting, it is 'The Painting'. By destroying ‘safe’ areas, we free you to rediscover the authentic expression hidden underneath.

In the final stage, we transition to oil paints and brushes to bring the work to its conclusion. Using quick-drying alkyd oils, you’ll master the art of glazing—applying thin, luminous films of colour that settle into the 'valleys' of your texture to create depth and atmosphere. This is the moment for refinement: you’ll use fine brushes to enhance textures and add precise details where the painting calls for them. Watch as your work truly comes alive, evolving from a raw experiment into a sophisticated, personal expression of your creative journey.


You always thought you could be good at art but didn’t know how to start?
Maybe you have done some painting but don’t know how to proceed.
Are your paintings very tight and precise, and do you want to loosen up and develop your imagination?
Do you just want to learn different painting techniques?
Jeremy can help you develop your creative ideas and techniques in a weekly 3-hour workshop for over four weeks. The classes are held on the balcony of Jeremy’s studio gallery in the Perth Hills, up amongst the trees with passing traffic of parrots, cockatoos and a variety of birds. There is limited room for easels, and as Jeremy works with you individually, we limit class sizes to a maximum of four students.
Over four weeks, expert artist Jeremy Holton will guide you through the basics of designing your painting, texturing your canvas, painting loosely in acrylic paint, then painting and glazing with quick-drying oil paints. Don't worry if you're a beginner; this class is designed to alleviate fears and make you feel comfortable and confident in your artistic abilities.
Week one:
Use photographs and AI (Artificial Intelligence) for inspiration to create several thumbnails in your sketchbook.
Learn about design, including negative space, tonal images, and joins
Draw with an Artline 0.2 mm pen using spit and smudge to create tonal areas.
Jeremy will assist you in selecting the best thumbnail to form the basis of your painting.
Move to the easel and loosely transfer your chosen thumbnail onto your canvas.
Work in black and white, creating texture with acrylic modelling paste.
Jeremy doesn’t allow you to use brushes; instead, you apply the paste with colour shapers, which prevents you from getting tight and precise.
This is the first version of your painting, and it won’t be exactly the same as your thumbnail as the work begins to take on a life of its own.
Week two:
Learn about:
Bonnard's colour patches, patterns, rejection of perspective, his lost wife and the always cat.
Klimt's unique landscape designs.
Lloyd Rees stretched landscapes and tonal joins.
Record the direction of the light in your painting.
Develop a colour design with instructions from Jeremy about the colour wheel, primary and secondary colours, tints and shades, and some colour theory.
Colour your painting in acrylic paint, using pure colour and working loosely using colour shapers. Learn to let the painting talk to you as the paint and texture stimulate your imagination.
Week three:
Continue developing the painting in acrylic paint as you begin to discover its subject. AI may be valuable at this stage, giving insights into possible directions. Depending on how quickly you work, you may progress to oil paints.
Week four:
Paint using quick-drying alkyd-based oil paints. Glaze the painting with thin films of colour, unifying the work and creating incredible depth.
Use a fine brush to create detail and exaggerate the texture.
Allow the painting to blossom.
Jeremy will guide you through the techniques and skills needed to finalise the project, but the painting will always be uniquely yours.
How to use varnish to bring out the colours and tonal contrasts.
How to frame or mount the work for display at home or in a gallery.
Take home your lovely painting.
A note on AI (Artificial Intelligence)
AI is a problem for artists as it is easy to use to generate lovely images in the style of any famous artist. Some people think it makes artists obsolete. However, AI is also a valuable resource for artists as we can use it to generate ideas and stimulate our imagination.
Jeremy teaches that the process of creating art is essential, not the final product. If you let it, your painting will lead you to an alternative reality made from paint and canvas, and it's OK to use any resources to guide you on your journey.
Artists have always drawn inspiration from the works of their peers, using them as a springboard for their creations. AI, in this context, serves a similar purpose. In Jeremy’s workshops, where appropriate, we leverage AI to refine our ideas for the paintings we envision, and even during the painting process, AI can be a source of creative inspiration.

I have worked as a town planner, a Geologist in East Africa and Australia, a senior manager in IT for BHP and Woodside and a management consultant.
After studying for a Diploma of Art at the prestigious Claremont School of Art in Perth, I started working as a professional artist in 1994. Since then I have had countless exhibitions. I have sold well over 1000 paintings and my work is represented in collections around the world.
I teach painting at my studio/gallery in the Perth Hills and our arts guest house in NE Thailand by the Mekong River (Thailand Painting Holidays). I teach techniques including oil pastel and inks and modelling paste/acrylic/quick-drying oils and glazing. My main emphasis is on helping students to loosen up and paint creatively from imagination.
My own paintings are in acrylic and oil on canvas or cotton rag paper, incorporating a wide range of techniques from rough brushing, in which I drag paint across the canvas, to the glow of multiple translucent glazes. Recently, I have been working in digital painting mediums, experimenting, extending my range and style.
