Pottery Taster Workshop: Try Clay

Explore both wheel throwing and hand building in one class!

2 hours Location Braeside Class size 1 to 20 (public classes), 5 to 25   $99 - $119 ($119 per guest when you book for 1+ guests, $99/guest for 5+ guests) (Afterpay available)

Ready to trade your keyboard for a lump of clay? Step into the studio for a diverse two hour workshop designed to give you a full, hands-on introduction to the world of ceramics.
This isn't a rushed "taster" session—it’s a deep dive into the two primary ways we shape clay into art. Whether you're looking for a meditative new hobby or just a fun, tactile escape, this workshop offers the perfect balance of education and play.
In this session, we don’t limit you to just one method.
You’ll spend time exploring both major styles of pottery:
  • Wheel Throwing: Experience the magic of the potter’s wheel. You’ll learn how to work with the spinning motion to pull up walls and shape the clay into functional forms like bowls or cups. It’s a captivating process of coordination and flow.
  • Hand Building: Discover the grounded, sculptural side of pottery. Using ancient techniques like pinching and coiling, you’ll learn how to build pieces from the ground up. This method allows for endless personalization and unique, organic textures.
Pottery is a practice of patience. By giving ourselves an extra hour over the standard introductory class, we remove the "rush." You’ll have the luxury of time to experiment, refine your surfaces, and truly sink into the sensory experience without watching the clock.

Kingston Clay Studio | Creative Pottery Classes in Melbourne’s Southeast
Kingston Clay Studio was founded on real industry experience. Studio owner and second-generation potter Peder Wilhem McCanless, trained in the Seagrove, North Carolina tradition, has spent over 40 years as a working potter, production studio owner, gallery owner, and nonprofit pottery organization leader across the US and Australia. That background sets the standard for everything taught here. Our instructors teach proven production techniques, the same methods used by potters working in the industry, not just classroom exercises. The equipment throughout the studio, including our wheels, kilns, mixers, and pugmills, is professional-grade gear we also sell directly to the public as an authorized dealer for Nidec-Shimpo and Venco. Our facility is fully heated and cooled, well lit, and spacious enough to host team building events for up to 50 participants.
