Share a Wheel: Pottery for Two Class

Share a wheel with a friend or partner for team fun!

75 mins Location Braeside Class size 1 to 20 (public classes), 8 to 50   $50 - $65 ($65 per guest when you book for 1+ guests, $50/guest for 10+ guests) (Afterpay available)

At Share a Wheel, we’ve turned the solitary art of the ceramic wheel into a collaborative team sport.
Forget sitting at separate stations across the room. We believe that getting your hands dirty is better when you’re doing it together. Whether you're a couple on a unique date night or best friends looking for a new hobby, this pottery class is designed for connection through creation.
How It Works
One wheel, two people, and endless possibilities. You and your partner will share a single station, rotating roles and supporting each other through every step of the process:
  • The Tag-Team Approach: Take turns at the wheel while your partner acts as the "Master Assistant"—prepping clay, checking symmetry, or helping you remember that crucial next step.
  • Four-Handed Throwing: Work simultaneously on a single piece. It’s a lesson in communication, patience, and shared vision (with a high probability of laughter when things get wobbly).
  • Social Learning: Pottery has a steep learning curve. By working together, you catch each other's mistakes and celebrate the wins as you watch your skills evolve from "lumpy bowl" to "handcrafted masterpiece."
Why "Share a Wheel"?
Pottery is traditionally a quiet, solo endeavour. We’ve flipped the script to create a high-energy, social atmosphere. It’s less about perfection and more about the process of helping one another. You’ll leave not just with a physical piece of art, but with a shared memory of something you built—quite literally—together.
Ready to get messy?
Whether you're total beginners or have some clay experience, we provide the wheel, the clay, and the guidance. You just bring the partner.
This session is for two participants sharing one wheel. Please ensure you book for each person attending at $65 each.
Kingston Clay Studio is led by Will McCanless, a second-generation master potter from the historic Seagrove, North Carolina pottery tradition, with over 40 years of experience and recognition as North Carolina’s Pottery Laureate. Every instructor at our studio is personally trained by Will, so no matter who’s teaching your class, you’re learning techniques built on decades of real craft.

The teacher was very patient, helpful, and made the whole experience feel relaxed and enjoyable. The class was fun, hands-on, and perfect for doing something a bit different together. The hour and a half went so quickly, which is always a good sign. Highly recommend for a date night or anyone wanting to try pottery for the first time.
  • 5/5 from Jorge Ivan Castano Jaramillo, attended Apr 2026: We chose this experience for a first date and it was the best decision we could have made. We couldn't talk as much as you might expect as staying focused takes more concentration than you'd think, and multitasking isn't really an option to me but that's actually part of what makes it work. Building something together, wine glass in hand, creates a natural connection without the pressure of constant conversation. The teacher was warm and supportive throughout, which added to the relaxed, joyful atmosphere. The workshop itself is spotless and well-organised, and being able to take your finished pieces home at the end is a lovely touch

  • 5/5 from Mukund Goriparthi, attended Dec 2025: We had such a great time at the Romantic Wheel Throwing Workshop. The atmosphere was warm and relaxed, and our teacher was incredibly patient and helpful, making the whole experience easy and enjoyable even for beginners. The group was fun, which added to the overall vibe, and it was a perfect activity for couples to do together. We also loved that they took great photos throughout the session, so we have lovely memories to look back on. Highly recommend!
  • 5/5 from Ashleigh Volf, attended Oct 2025: Our teacher was ace! Very engaging and knowledgeable, we had a radical time! Highly recommend this class ️
  • 5/5 from Rebecca Anderson, attended Sep 2025: I did the 1-hour "romantic" wheel throwing pottery class with a friend after my partner couldnt come along and absolutely loved it! Shelly, our teacher, was fantastic – her instructions were really clear and she was so supportive the whole way through. You could tell she genuinely wanted everyone to have a great time and feel confident at the wheel. The hour flew by way too quickly, so I’ll definitely be back (next time for the 2-hour class!) because it was so much fun I didn’t want it to end. I walked away with at least one piece I was so happy with.
  • 5/5 from Dhruv Patel, attended Aug 2025: We joined Shelly’s pottery class for our anniversary and it turned out to be such a great experience. Shelly was patient, encouraging, and made the whole session fun and relaxed. It was a refreshing change from our usual routine and something we’ll definitely remember. Highly recommend her class if you’re looking for a creative way to spend time together.
  • 5/5 from Shaun Francis, attended Aug 2025: This was an anniversary suprise for my partner. Neither of us had done any pottery since high school, a long, long time ago. Our facilitator was fantastic & explained the process in an easy to learn method.
  • 5/5 from David Reyes Rosero, attended Aug 2025: Shelley was great!! The instructions and help was really good.. we had a lot of fun
  • 1/5 from Joshlyn Chand, attended Aug 2025: Our teacher Emma was quite rude to us right off the bat for no apparent reason. I’ve been to this studio before and the other teacher Will was wonderful and encouraging while Emma seemed to have some sort of bias against us, which was a shame since we came for my partners birthday. she also accidentally ruined my partners piece close to the end of class not leaving her much time at all to recreate it. Not a great experience at all.
  • 5/5 from Sam Newcombe, attended Jul 2025: Steph and I really had a great time, we felt really welcomed by Shelley, and felt really comfortable, really fun!!
  • 5/5 from Jihad Gherzeddine, attended Jun 2025: It was so awesome! Me and my girlfriend loved every bit of it. It’s so pleasing to learn this craft and it only takes a few minutes to see your craft become beautiful!
  • 5/5 from Desiree Harker, attended May 2025: Emma was friendly and helpful, showing us the basics of wheel throwing and simple techniques. We created two pieces each and came away with knowledge we previously didn’t have, plus sharing in a fun and intimate experience as a couple. Would recommend!
  • 5/5 from Erin Hayley, attended May 2025: Great introduction into pottery. My partner and I really enjoyed our session. Our teacher was really helpful, clear instructons and allowed us to be really hands on. We will be back for a longer workshop next time.
  • 5/5 from Rob Dalziel, attended May 2025: James took our clay throwing class and it was amazing! Very romantic and great at teaching!
  • 5/5 from Jamie Callaghan, attended Mar 2025: Absolutely amazing, super friendly, super laid back, loved it, would 100% recommend!!

Kingston Clay Studio | Creative Pottery Classes in Melbourne’s Southeast
Kingston Clay Studio was founded on real industry experience. Studio owner and second-generation potter Peder Wilhem McCanless, trained in the Seagrove, North Carolina tradition, has spent over 40 years as a working potter, production studio owner, gallery owner, and nonprofit pottery organization leader across the US and Australia. That background sets the standard for everything taught here. Our instructors teach proven production techniques, the same methods used by potters working in the industry, not just classroom exercises. The equipment throughout the studio, including our wheels, kilns, mixers, and pugmills, is professional-grade gear we also sell directly to the public as an authorized dealer for Nidec-Shimpo and Venco. Our facility is fully heated and cooled, well lit, and spacious enough to host team building events for up to 50 participants.
