This workshop is suitable for beginners and improvers. A little watercolour knowledge can be helpful, but it’s not required -- your tutor will guide you through every step, from prepping the silk to final finishing, so you can relax and enjoy the process!
What to expect:
  • Learn how to stretch and prepare silk for painting.
  • Explore watercolour techniques adapted for silk, including flowing abstracts and soft colour blends.
  • Try tools and mediums for different effects, plus an intro to batik and gutta resist methods.
  • Practice design planning before moving onto your final silk piece.
  • Paint your own full length silk scarf using vibrant colours and free-form techniques.
  • Discover how to set your silk ready for wearing or framing.
  • Small class size for personal guidance (usually max 4).
You’ll leave with new confidence in silk painting, a finished wearable piece full of colour and expression, and the knowledge to continue experimenting at home.

FAQ

Where am I going and how to get to the workshop?!
The Rundle Collective Studios is located in Gawler Place near Rundle Mall. We have a glass door on the ground floor located next to the National Pharmacies and Paradigm Zone Arcade (opposite Daiso). At the front door you will need to be shown into the building by the artist - they will be there to show you in but also don’t hesitate to contact them when you arrive via phone or text. You will receive their contact details after booking.
What are the event spaces like?
There are two event spaces at the Rundle Collective - the smaller space on Level 2 and the larger space on Level 3. We are usually using the larger space on Level 3 unless it is a private booking. Both are able to be made private by shutting the door to the main artist studios. We have accessible bathrooms on both levels. We can also access the kitchen on level 2 as needed.
I've never painted with watercolour before but I really want to try this out!?
No worries - we will be there to help you through the workshop. If you are nervous feel free to reach out to us with any questions! There will be dedicated time at the start of the workshop to test out your painting and try to trust the process - it can be nice and relaxing to let the paint do most of the work for you!

What happens if I mess up my painting in the session!?
Luckily silk painting isn't permanent until it has been steam set - so you likely have a chance to make some adjustments before committing to your final piece.
Location

The Rundle Collective Studios - 58 Gawler Pl, Adelaide SA

The Rundle Collective Studios is located in Gawler Place near Rundle Mall. We have a glass door on the ground floor located next to the National Pharmacies and Paradigm Zone Arcade (opposite Daiso). There is some street parking available but most is timed or paid. If you are lucky depending on the time you may have luck on Pirie or Flinders Street but this may be a bit of a walk for some attendees. We would recommend looking at the pre-booked undercover parking options near Rundle Mall for the best paid parking rate, or consider parking close to the city and using public transport to access the city if cost is a concern. The studio building is fully wheelchair accessible as we have an internal lift. We are on Level 2 and 3 of the building and you will need to have assistance from our team to access the building on the day. Don't hesitate to use our door bell or the contact number provided if you have any difficulties. Generally, the space is fairly quiet and sensory friendly - if you have any accessibility considerations you would like to discuss please feel free to contact us so we can ensure the event is adjusted accordingly.

As a Contemporary Artist I have widely travelled and learned skills from masters of their craft from around the globe. I am dedicated to ongoing professional development and have completed my Honours in Contemporary art, Bachelor of Art specialising in Photographic based practice and more. My work focuses on many mediums coming together to create immersive art experiences and I am constantly challenging the boundaries of traditional art mediums. I create beautiful things but also work with the experience of creating art as being a very special experience.
I really want to help other people build the confidence they need to enjoy the act of making or the process of creating as this is such a fundamentally human experience no matter your current skill level. I work often in the media of digital photography, analogue photography, alternative chemical photographic image making, watercolour and ink painting, silk painting, drawing and fine illustration and more. I have worked with many people to build their skills and have delivered many workshops on both traditional mediums as well as contemporary approaches to using art mediums. The main difference for my workshops and 1 on 1 art mentorship is a focus on contemporary approaches and benefits of mindful practice. If you are looking to develop your skills further in new directions this is were I will bring a unique set of guiding questions and help open some doorways of ideas that you might not have come across yet and which you likely won't find in more traditional workshops. For those who just want to gain some confidence in general mediums first, I focus more on the fundamentals you need to work on in order to gain confidence, and focus on creating joy in being present when creating. There are so many documented benefits of creating and using art to help improve individual wellbeing - I want to empower people to feel confident and treat creating as a kind of moment for self care or something to be cherished or celebrated, and for people to gain the confidence to share their creations with others (or just make for themselves!).
I have been part of many local arts collectives in Adelaide, and am currently a resident artist at the Rundle Collective Studios in the CBD. I have also been part of a small artist run publishing initiative, providing illustrations for local publications, part of many exhibitions of contemporary work, and have completed artist in residence programs in various countries. As part of this journey I have been a humble recipient of the New Colombo Program full scholarship to live and study abroad in Vietnam, conducting community workshops on art and sustainability with a major exhibition with the Vietnamese Women's Museum. I have also participated with Honourable Mention in the Canon 48 hour photography challenge in Adelaide, and had work published in multiple noted publications. I have participated in many exhibitions and continue to explore ways that connect art with our global community.
