What to bring
An apron, blue masking tape and some wet wipes. Your own soft pastels set.Mandatory:- Either their own range of pastels or this recommended set Sennelier Soft Pastels 30 landscape plein air L'Ecu half sticks (approximately $120). Available from SoftPastels.com in Newcastle.
- If you already have a range of soft pastels, please contact the tutor to check they are suitable
- Please do NOT purchase semi-hard or student-grade pastels like Mungyo or Rembrandt.

I watched them meet and gesture with their stick-like legs, disappear down tunnels, and re-emerge carrying twigs, leaves, and heavy clods of wet clay — which, in my imagination, they used like cement to build their world.I was utterly absorbed. I wanted to know what was happening beneath the surface — so much so that I poked around with a stick, until the ants burst out in outrage to defend their home. When one bit my big toe (and if you know bull ants, you’ll understand), I ran howling back to the house.As Mum patched me up, I couldn’t stop talking — about the ants, the tunnels, the hidden chambers underground. She simply said, “Draw it for me.”So I did. A horizon line. Wriggling tunnels beneath. Stick-leg ant people. Balls of dirt. Eggs and baby ants tucked away in secret places.That moment felt like magic.Since then, I’ve never stopped being fascinated by the land — by dirt and mud and water, by what lies on the surface and what flows unseen beneath it.
