Welcome and Introduction to Wood Burning
You'll first meet your host and the other guests. Then, you will be introduced to the art of wood burning (pyrography), the tools we will use, and how to work safely with the burner. You will also see some finished examples to inspire your design.
Choose and Prepare Your Design
You will choose a design for your wooden board. You can select from a range of templates provided or create your own simple drawing. Your host will guide you on how to transfer the design onto the wood surface so it is ready for burning.
Learn the Wood Burning Technique
Now you will start using the wood burning tool. Your host will demonstrate how to control the temperature, hold the pen correctly, and create different textures and lines. You will practice before starting your main design.
Burn Your Artwork
You will carefully burn your design into the wood. Your host will walk around the class to give guidance and help you improve your technique while you work on your artwork.
Finishing Touches and Sealing
In the final step you will add finishing touches to your piece and learn how to protect your artwork with oil or sealant. By the end of the class you will have a beautiful handmade wood-burned piece to take home.

I was afraid it would be awkward spending 3 hours in a stranger's home, but our teacher was hospitable and so lovely, showing us where the bathroom was, asking us if we enjoy the music and even offered us drinks and snacks. She makes good tea :) and she was so easy to talk to! We each got a stack of beautiful designs to choose from, she gave us a detailed rundown of how to use the burner and time to practise. She was patient, offering guidance but never taking over (perfect ️) The best part is how much she boosted our confidence. My mum and I came out so proud of our work! I'm gonna enjoy making more art. We were welcomed, shown where the bathroom was and offered tea or coffee and snacks(which were delicious). There were well designed printed handouts (With colourful examples of the artist's work). Some relaxing music, and all the equipment we needed to get started on our pyrography masterpiece. I had selected a picture to burn, but changed to a simpler design (a wise suggestion from teacher).As a result, I feel, I had a pretty successful first attempt at wood burning. I didn't finish my picture, however I'm hooked. Simple, fun art. Highlight of the day(aside of a wonderful and unique creative experience with my daughter)was our host. Hi, I’m Shahnaz, the artist behind Art by Shahnaz.Art has been part of my life for over 30 years. My passion started with portrait drawing, where I became fascinated by how simple lines and shadows can capture a person’s emotion and character. Over time, this passion grew into both a professional art practice and teaching journey.I work across several mediums including charcoal portrait drawing, wood burning (pyrography), oil painting and mural art. Portraits remain my favourite subject because they allow me to tell a story and capture the personality of a person through art.Over the years I have run creative workshops in different locations across Western Australia including Perth, Bunbury, Kalgoorlie and Pinjarra. Each workshop is kept small (usually around 10 students) so that everyone receives personal guidance and support during the creative process.Teaching is something I truly enjoy. Many people arrive at my classes thinking they are not artistic, but by the end of the workshop they leave with a finished artwork and a completely different level of confidence in their creativity. Seeing that transformation is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.My workshops are designed to be relaxed, welcoming and beginner-friendly. I guide students step-by-step while encouraging them to explore their own creative style. Whether it’s learning the calming technique of wood burning or discovering the power of charcoal portrait drawing, my goal is to make art accessible and enjoyable for everyone.Through Art by Shahnaz, I hope to share my love of art, inspire creativity, and give people a memorable hands-on experience they can be proud
