Tufting Course: Make a Custom Rug

Learn how to make a custom rug in Melbourne

12 hours total (over 2 dates) Class size 8 to 12 guests       $295

Jump onboard the world’s latest craft obsession - tufting! Easy to pick up and hard to put down, tufting is primarily used in rug making and can be applied to a plethora of projects, including pillows, art pieces, furniture, and clothing. In this hands-on weekend workshop, we’ll cover everything you need to know about tufting and you’ll come away with your own custom, one-of-a-kind rug. This masterclass covers the A to Z of tufting, with nine hours of crafting over two days.

We’ll start with chatting about materials required for tufting, and how the craft can be applied to various projects before moving on to designing and planning our projects. We'll run through a quick run-down on various techniques, including hand-tufting and hooking, before moving on to machine tufting with AK-1 cut pile tufting guns. Investing in one of these bad boys (not to mention the rest of the setup) is an expensive purchase, so you’ll have the chance to practice and test one in the course before pulling the trigger. You’ll learn how to set up your frame for tufting, rug design principles, safe and proper use of a tufting gun, techniques for a professional finish, and some basic troubleshooting. Then it’s your turn. Spend the rest of the session tufting up a storm, bringing your creation to life.

Towards the end of the class, we’ll discuss various options for sealing your yarn in place, and we’ll finish by securing it with glue. After 12 hours of drying, you’ll return Sunday morning to finish your rug. We’ll discuss the wide range of rug backing options available to you and teach you an effective finishing technique for your magic carpet. Finally, we’ll spend the rest of the session fine-tuning our creations, tidying up edges, and trimming excess yarn.

This class runs over two days with the following times: Saturday 10am-4pm  Sunday 10am-12pm This course is strictly limited to 10 participants.

Important: Tufting is a rather physical craft, and you will be on your feet, standing for most of the Saturday session. This activity is not suited for participants under 15 years of age.

  • 5/5 from Casey Shelton, attended Jun 2024: Stacey was a great instructor - supportive and positive, and I felt she shared her time evenly which was great. Helena worked miracles on my rug and patched the holes which I was super grateful for. As someone who is not creative at all (but is trying), I enjoyed my introduction to tufting. Thank you ️
  • 4/5 from Leah Dunkley, attended Jun 2024: This was a great class as a beginner - everything was set up so we simply arrived and started our project. The only drawback with that is that you leave not knowing basics like how to set up your frame or what to know when doing yourself at home later. That said, the beauty of the class is that it allows you to try tufting out to see if you like it without all the hassles. Great teacher - Stacey was a legend and very approachable. You never feel stupid and the atmosphere was fun and encouraging. Highly recommend!

The class was definitely good value for what we received - all materials, a day and a half of workshop, the instructor's expertise. We would do it again. Thanks Helena!

The space itself was great and welcoming and there were snacks and a tea/coffee station if you needed some extra energy while tufting. Helena explained everything clearly and even gave us information on what we need to get/ look out for if we decide to set yourselves up to do it at home in the future. I went in thinking it would be harder than it was and it didn’t take long to feel comfortable doing it. It’s quite the workout though especially the first day. My arms and feet were very sore but it was more than worth it. Thanks Helena

  • 5/5 from Roxy, attended Dec 2022: Helena Is such an inviting and patient teacher where no question is too silly or problem too hard to solve. The class was relaxed, informative, and very enjoyable. I can't wait to apply all the knowledge I've acquired to start my next tufting project. Oh and Shasha the dog is such a darling :-)
  • 5/5 from Roxann Maries, attended Dec 2022: Helena was great! Super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. The class was fun and I’m hooked. Just want to make more now!
  • 3/5 from Svetlana Volochina, attended Dec 2022: The teacher was friendly and patient, however inappropriately dressed as a teacher. She was wearing very short blouse with fully exposed tummy and back also very tight jeans. I felt uncomfortable. Another thing, when the front of the rug was completed and we had to do backing, teacher offered for everyone only black, unhemmed material, which looked very messy. For my blu and white rug this backing material was unsuitable and teacher had nothing white. I unfinished my work and planning to finish it at home using my own white backing. I hope that my review will be helpful for other students and the teacher.
