Lose yourself in the colourful, fun, and mesmerising process of water marbling. In this introductory workshop in Melbourne with Live For Art, you will create unique colourful patterns on paper and on either a canvas or cards. You can display the papers as works of art in their own right or use them in collage and card making.
In this workshop, you will be learning a style of water marbling based on the beautiful centuries-old art form of Ebru. We will mostly print on A4 size papers, building up to a larger A3 paper, 2 greeting cards (with envelopes), or a small canvas.
This class will cover:
  • A brief explanation of marbling and its history and uses.
  • How to prepare your water bath by preparing carrageenan.
  • What additional preparation some things need - using alum.
  • What tools and paint are required and how to use them.
  • Exploring different pattern creation and colour combinations.
  • How to execute the print pick-up for maximum effect.
If you're looking for relaxing things to do in Melbourne, why not join this water marbling workshop and unwind with like-minded creatives as you learn new skills?
TIP: The papers need several hours to dry properly. If driving, make sure you have space in your car and plastic sheeting for your items to lie flat on, as they may still be damp. Or you are welcome to come back another day to pick up the art or pay for postage. (You are welcome to decide on the day when we see how dry we can get them. This might depend on the weather.)
Please note:
  • Gloves will be provided for people who have seaweed allergies (carrageenan is made from seaweed).
  • Non-slip shoes are essential.
  • The studio is not accessible to wheelchairs, and entry is via 2 plus 6 steps.
  • You will be provided with a plastic apron; however, a cloth apron might be better, so bring one if you can.
  • Photographs and video footage will be taken throughout the workshop. These will be used on Live For Art social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook, Threads). We make every attempt to exclude faces, but this is not always possible. Please let the teacher know if you have any concerns.
  • The maximum class size is 8 students.
  • Do not attend the class if you are experiencing any flu or unwell symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, or a runny nose (a full refund will be provided if you are unwell).
What you'll get
  • Up to 10 pieces of A4 and 1 A3 paper with your printed marbled art
  • One small canvas (8x8 inches) OR 2 greeting cards with your marbled art
  • Guidance from an expert
  • All materials provided
  • Light refreshments (tea, coffee) provided
Knowledge required
This is a beginner-friendly class.
What to bring
  • Make sure to wear old clothes you are prepared to get ink on, as it can get messy.
  • An apron (or use a plastic one provided).
  • Pencil, notebook, and pen if you want to take notes.
  • A large piece of plastic to lay wet artwork on to take home in your car.
