Watercolour Sketching Workshop

Learn to sketch confidently using watercolors with take-home artist-quality paints!

3 hours Class size 1 to 10 guests

$89 (Afterpay & PayPal Pay in 4 available)

Please note these workshops run in small groups of no more than 5 people - if you can't book for enough spots please reach out to us with a message to see how we can accommodate your entire group as we can run additional times as needed, or discuss a custom workshop for larger groups.
This workshop aims to encourage you to paint anywhere, anytime, and find ways to capture the world around you.
While you don’t need lots of experience to join this workshop, it will be helpful to have an understanding of the basics. This could include just trying some things yourself to get a feel for how watercolour brushes work!
If you feel very nervous, though, we do have a fundamentals watercolour workshop that will help you master all of the basics. This workshop is for people who want to paint things that look like things or who want to feel more confident using that art journal that has been sitting on the shelf for a while...
By the end, you will leave this session with practical technique guides and, hopefully, the passion to start journalling!
We recommend this session if you want to get better at painting figuratively—i.e., painting nature, landscapes, things—but also if you need help getting good results in your art journal, which means abstract painting or capturing textures as well!
The session will run for three hours with a short break for tea or coffee (provided on-site, cost inclusive).
Workshop outline:
  • Types of watercolour journals and what is “Plein Air” painting *but please note we will be indoors!
  • How to use watercolour pans and a portable setup
  • Underdrawings and underpaintings
  • Mixed media layering
  • Combining your drawing and painting skills to sketch!
In the future, we may run some group "come and paint" sessions at the botanic gardens for those who have the supplies but want some guidance! So let us know if this is something you might want to hear about.
What you'll get
This workshop will include a take-home kit of:
  • Artist-quality watercolour pans (primary colours)
  • Portable painting palette
  • Mini sketchbook
  • Artist quality papers to keep painting!
Knowledge required
Beginner-friendly but also suited to people with some existing watercolour/drawing/painting experience.
What to bring
No need to bring anything! However, if you do have supplies you would like to get advice on, or your own brushes you are comfortable with, please feel welcome to bring these. Also, if you wish, bring something to eat/drink.

FAQ

I'm a complete beginner to watercolour but really want to try this out - is that ok?
Absolutely! If you are willing to try things and learn from making mistakes come on down. If you get very nervous trying new things consider looking into our beginners fundamentals of watercolour workshop first or contact the artist for a private session instead so we can tailor the session to you!
I have done some painting before - can I bring or show some of my past paintings to get some advice?
Absolutely! This is such an important part of learning these skills - if you are willing to share we are more than happy to help give some guidance. If you would like some ongoing support have a chat with the artist about further tailored 1:1 sessions or other classes suited to your goals.
What is around the area for parking or public transport?
There is some street parking available but most is timed or paid. If you are lucky depending on the time you may have luck on Pirie or Flinders Street but this may be a bit of a walk for some attendees. We would recommend looking at the pre-booked undercover parking options near Rundle Mall for the best paid parking rate, or consider parking close to the city and using public transport to access the city if cost is a concern. We are located near a few options for city buses and tram stops along the Botanic route stopping just in front of Gawler Place (near the art gallery/library).

Is the building accessible?
The studio building is fully wheelchair accessible as we have an internal lift. We are on Level 2 and 3 of the building and you will need to have assistance from our team to access the building on the day. Don't hesitate to use our contact number provided if you have any difficulties. Generally, the space is fairly quiet and sensory friendly - if you have any accessibility considerations you would like to discuss please feel free to contact us so we can ensure the event is adjusted accordingly.
Where are the workshops held?
There are two event spaces at the Rundle Collective - the smaller space on Level 2 and the larger space on Level 3. We are usually using the larger space on Level 3 unless it is a private booking. Both are able to be made private by shutting the door to the main artist studios. We have accessible bathrooms on both levels. We can also access the kitchen on level 2 as needed.
I want to do a workshop but I am not sure about doing a group workshop - is there another option?
Yes we take private bookings with a one person minimum - please reach out to arrange a specific time/date through the Class Bento app! We can also talk about bigger private groups as well if you would like!

As a Contemporary Artist I have widely travelled and learned skills from masters of their craft from around the globe. I am dedicated to ongoing professional development and have completed my Honours in Contemporary art, Bachelor of Art specialising in Photographic based practice and more. My work focuses on many mediums coming together to create immersive art experiences and I am constantly challenging the boundaries of traditional art mediums. I create beautiful things but also work with the experience of creating art as being a very special experience.
I really want to help other people build the confidence they need to enjoy the act of making or the process of creating as this is such a fundamentally human experience no matter your current skill level. I work often in the media of digital photography, analogue photography, alternative chemical photographic image making, watercolour and ink painting, silk painting, drawing and fine illustration and more. I have worked with many people to build their skills and have delivered many workshops on both traditional mediums as well as contemporary approaches to using art mediums. The main difference for my workshops and 1 on 1 art mentorship is a focus on contemporary approaches and benefits of mindful practice. If you are looking to develop your skills further in new directions this is were I will bring a unique set of guiding questions and help open some doorways of ideas that you might not have come across yet and which you likely won't find in more traditional workshops. For those who just want to gain some confidence in general mediums first, I focus more on the fundamentals you need to work on in order to gain confidence, and focus on creating joy in being present when creating. There are so many documented benefits of creating and using art to help improve individual wellbeing - I want to empower people to feel confident and treat creating as a kind of moment for self care or something to be cherished or celebrated, and for people to gain the confidence to share their creations with others (or just make for themselves!).
I have been part of many local arts collectives in Adelaide, and am currently a resident artist at the Rundle Collective Studios in the CBD. I have also been part of a small artist run publishing initiative, providing illustrations for local publications, part of many exhibitions of contemporary work, and have completed artist in residence programs in various countries. As part of this journey I have been a humble recipient of the New Colombo Program full scholarship to live and study abroad in Vietnam, conducting community workshops on art and sustainability with a major exhibition with the Vietnamese Women's Museum. I have also participated with Honourable Mention in the Canon 48 hour photography challenge in Adelaide, and had work published in multiple noted publications. I have participated in many exhibitions and continue to explore ways that connect art with our global community.
